The Amp Game,
So? What did you finally select? I have a Sony TA-N90ES and think it is the equal of many highly regarded amps that sell for much more. With its MOSFET design from end-to-end and low gain and solid build quality, it is hard to beat for $500, or so...
What's your High End best buy/unknown components?
Wasatch Cable Works interconnects. Stunning improvement over the Cardas and Synergistic Research I was using. A very well kept secret.
CD Player Advice
I don't listen as much to digital as I do to vinyl, so I sold my CAL high-end CD player and bought a Philips 963SA SACD/CD/DVD player. It has built-in 192 kHz upsampling. I can tell you that it made my digital collection come alive with the upsamp...
In need of assistance: integrated amp selection
Definitely the Sony TA-F808ES MOSFET integrated and Philips 963SA SACD/CD player. Why? Because I have listened to this combination (along with my vinyl) for about a year and it is great!! I especially like the 192 kHz upsampling built into the Phi...
I've got a basic, directional decision to make.
Go with the Sony integrated amp. MOSFET output stage is smooth as butter. Great sounding, high quality amp. Big one is rated at 100 wpc. Also includes a great phono stage capaable of running an MC cartridge.
Balanced Audio VK-200....
BAT tells me that the upgrade came in all amps with S/N greater than "about 300".
Less is more? Where's the midrange question -help
I would suggest more than 100 hours is required. More like 200 before they sound 'right' (open, airy, etc.). And then will continue to smooth out for another couple of hundred hours. Nothing makes them sound better than playing them. They need the...
Soliloquy 5.3 vs. 6.2 vs. 6.3
I was trying to decide between the 6.3 and the Audio Physic Tempo IIIi that I eventual purchased. I spoke with the folks at both Pass Labs and Soliloquy about driving the 6.3 with the Aleph 30. They both thought it would be a great match in modera...
SS Int Amps: Bryston, Simaudio & Magnum-Dynalab
I listened to a Bryston B-60RP and thought it was excellent with my 5.0s speakers. I eventually purchased a Bryston 2B-LP and bi-amped the 5.0s and it was just that much better. The eventually went the extra mile and bought a B-25RP and another 2B...
Replace Dynaudio 1.8 w/ AP Virgo or Tempo?
In addition to upgrading your speaker cables, if it is possible to biwire the 1.8, you may also wish to try doing so. I have found that it usually makes some difference, and with some speakers it makes a big difference. But that said, the Tempo II...
Audio Physic Tempo 3i vs Revel F-30: Better Value?
I can only comment on the IIIi's. I auditioned with a BAT VK-200/VK-3i amp/preamp and have heard nothing in the price range that has ever sounded so good to my ears (at least that I could afford the space to own - unlike the wonderful Maggie 3.6R)...
Amp blowing fuses
If BAT is doing the upgrade at no cost for original owners, then I think they have it covered. Do not know that they are, though. If I was an original owner I would certainly be telling them that I expected the fix for nothing.
Mosfet amps A true compromise betw. tubes and SS?
Muralman1 - what is a "step-up capacitor"? BAT also has a very neutral sound MOSFET amp in their VK-200 (now replaced by the VK-250). Two gain stages and no global feedback. A very "Passish" design philosophy. If one is looking for some inexpensiv...
Mosfet vs. Bipolar revisited and the Belles 350A
I have used several sizes and brands of bi-polar and MOSFET amps over the past 20 years. Smallest being 60wpc and the largest being 500wpc. I find that I prefer the clarity and speed my ears hear in a good MOSFET amp. The only bi-polar amp that ha...
Amp blowing fuses
BAT told me that the VK-200 needs an upgrade to the bias circuit, at $500, which might be your problem. I know that S/N 274 and earlier need the upgrade and S/N 371 and later do not. I am not sure where between these two S/Ns BAT made the modifica...
