Do HDCDs sound terrible on non HDCD players?
Hmm... I've got a Planet and that Shady Grove CD. It's always seemed to sound great. However my copy doesn't say HDCD on it. Is there a HDCD and a non HDCD version? If so it would make for a on interesting comparison.-Patrick
Return to Audio: What Products to Consider?
I agree with lugnut. You can't go wrong with that Naim 32/160 pre-power combo for $660. You can get a nice Rega Planet CD player for under $400. Pair this with your choice of inexpensive speakers and you've got a wonderful system. Rega, B&W, L...
RegaPlanet Original vs RegaPlanet 2000 vs Jupiter?
The original model is probably the best deal in a CD player you can get right now. I've auditioned the 2000 about three times, and don't think it's that much better. I would advise you to buy the original now, and save your money for a substantial...
Suggestions on Integrated to drive Tyler Ref. Mon
The Rega Mira is a nice warm solid state amp. It sounds great on just about any small speakers. The best part is the price: $950. You could take the extra $1000 and get a pile of new CDs. :)-Patrick
Why buy older digital gear?
The original question was why spend $500-$600 on an old CDP that was high end 8-10 years ago, instead of buying a new technology unit in the same price range. It seem to me that while the older high end models use outdated dacs, they still used v...
Why get an expensive tuner?Am I missing something?
The first thing you need is a great signal. If you're lucky your favorite station uses utra high end source gear. At that point you might find that a tuner will beat your TT or CDP. I've listened to a Naim NAT01 that sounded like an upper end CDP....
Oh where or where have all the buyers gone?
I haven't had any trouble selling gear on e-bay. In fact I've even sold some stuff for more than I paid. Plus I'm having a hard time finding the used gear that I want. It all seems to sell to fast or the price gets bid up to high. Of course the pr...
Best Sounding Cd Palyer for 2K
I just happened to hear the Linn Genki vs the Levinson stuff (listened while someone else was demoing). I thought it sounded great. Get a demo if you have a Linn dealer.
Whats the downside of leaving ones amps on allways
I'm not sure what Naim gear you're running. However my Nait5 sounds terrible when it's cold. After A hour or so it sounds better, and it gets better over the next day or two. -Patrick
Whats the deal with CD players?
I follow the school of thought that says source matters most. However I belive that you first need to have well designed pre/power and speakers. I suspect the H/K gear is just not capable of resolving the music from the more expensive CD players. ...
The best CD Player for the money
You can find an old Planet for around $350. It may not be the best outright, but it cost less than the tax on some peoples speaker cable.
Cambridge or Music Hall??
I think the planet sounds better than either of those players. These days Planets are going selling for $400 used. Another alternative is the Arcam cd72. To me it sounds better than the old planet. It's more detailed, but still has the fun sound o...
Opinions on Rega Amps and Speakers
I've heard the Ara's with a naim 150/32.5/hicap and they did sound neat. The build quality seems a little questionable though. What's up with those grills? I took one off, and spent about ten min trying to get it back on.
Opinions on Rega Amps and Speakers
I've been using a Mira 2000 with a first gen Planet for about four months now. I tried a first gen Mira, and found it to be fun, but not very detailed compared to the Mira 2000, or the Arcam Diva. I'm using some mordaunt short MS90 speakers, and ...
semi-budget sys - under 1450
Another good choice for an inexpensive monitor is the Mordaunt short MS-90. It sounds much like the Epos12 mentioned previously. It has good imaging, and room placement doesn't seem to to be a big issue. They are not well represented in the US, bu...
