Velodyne or REL or Vandersteen?
I agree with Sugarbrie. Dogs like table scraps. I have the HGS-15 (Kicks butt in Home theatre). I here from people I trust that the rel blends nicer for stereo but have never tried one. 
Help for S-video and Digital Optical
If you decide you would like to try a monster optical cable I might be able to squeek one or two out of my system. They always worked fine for me. I used them with my cd burner digital loop to a reciever I use to have.

MIT T- 2 OR BETTERCABLES? FOR SPEAKERS

CD recorder advice sought
Are you using the AES/EBU output on your dac? If so connect to the single ended output for recording. I to use a pioneer burner PDR509 works great.
