Classic preamp for Plinius SA-102: need advise
I would definitely look for a used BAT VK-5i over any of the SF line. I love SF amps, but their pre-amps sound kind of lifeless and dull to me.
Best SET Compatible Speakers, $4k-6k used
If you don't want a horn/lowther colored sound, I would recommend Spendor SP100. Presents a very stable 8ohm load and has relatively high sensitivity (over 90db). Very musical and emotionally satisfying especially when driven by SET amps. And last...
Help with Hi Power Tube Amp Selection
Sorry, was being lazy. It stands for pace, rhythm and timing.
Help with Hi Power Tube Amp Selection
The only time I heard the VR-4s in a dealer showroom, they were being powered by the Sonic Frontiers Power 2 amp (stereo amp, ~110W) and sounded amazing. Might be worth checking out.I think I can be of more help in your choice of pre-amps as I've ...
Good site for hard to find classical used and new
I'm a big fan of Vengerov as well. I just wish in his recordings he could be paired with better conductors.
Mozart Piano Concerto 21.
TweekermanI own and have listened to many Oistrakh recordings. I like him in few pieces (Beethoven VC, Prokofiev VCs...) but in general, I prefer Heifetz, Kogan, Milstein, Szigeti and Grumiaux. But if you have a suggestion for Oistrakh that you th...
Mozart Piano Concerto 21.
Lipatti/HvK is head and shoulders above all other recordings I've heard of #21. One of the all time great Schumann piano concerto recordings on the same disc just makes it a no brainer, despite the relatively poor sound. If you must have a stereo r...
Late Beethoven Piano Sonatas
Schnabel is the gold standard. I also like Edwin Fischer very much. For opus 90 and 101, Richter on Praga is also great. For opus 106, Richter is incomparable on Stradivarius label (live recording from 1976).I find Kempff to be dull, though his ea...
Classical CD-guide in print or on web?
The best resource on the Internet is the newsgroup rec.audio.classical.recordings. Best way to find a recommendation for a particular piece is to try the google search on the newsgroup. There are some really knowledgeable people who post to that n...
Bruckner 9th...
Saxo, you must get a copy of Jascha Horenstein/LSO Bruckner #8 to hear a true masterpiece of a performance. HvK pales in comparison. My copy is on intaglio label, which may be hard to find, unfortunately. Another great Bruckner recording by Horens...
Chopin nocturnes
Dinu Lipatti simply owns the waltzes. However, it is a mono recording, though relatively clean and good piano tone, so if you can, give it a listen first. For mazurkas, I love Kapell on RCA, but again, sound quality may be an issue (again, not bad...
Beethoven Symphony No. 7
As mentioned above, Kleiber is worth getting for the excellent #5, but by itself, #7 isn't my top choice.My favorites are (in no particular order):Guido Cantelli/Philharmonia Orchestra/EMI 7243 5 68217 2 9Klemperer/Philharmonia Orchestra/EMI 7243 ...
Good site for hard to find classical used and new
Slightly off topic, but Jax2, if you like Leonid Kogan, do everything in your power to acquire his 1950 recording of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto on Arlecchino. Sound is less than optimal (quite listenable though) but the performance is simply se...
