Exceptional Recording of Carmina Burana
Of the ones I've heard, my favorite is Muti on EMI (either Philadelphia or Philharmonia Orchestra...can't remember OTTOMH and I'm at work unfortunately). Rather bombastic if you like that sort of thing, and I do =)
Naxos CDs with Great Sound
If you like opera, check out "Barber of Seville" on Naxos. Good sound and world class performance of this warhorse.
Best Preamp Audio Research LS5 versus BAT VK-5i/SE
BluefinThe BAT VK-30 and BAT VK-5's are a completely different sounding preamps. VK-30 is far more neutral and slightly better extended in treble and bass than VK-5. VK-5, when I auditioned it, side by side with the VK-30, sounded like a classic t...
Natalie Merchant Fans
Glen, I think you'd definitely enjoy "Ophelia" if you liked "Tigerlilly." And although some people didn't like it, I rather enjoyed "Motherland." I will admit though, the first time I heard it, I didn't care for it. But I kept playing it just to s...
Best preamp for McCormack amp
As a former McCormack amp owner (0.5 deluxe), I'd say you should think about mating it with a tube pre-amp. I first tried a passive and then an active SS pre-amp and felt the midrange was just too lean. Trying it with my friend's Quicksilver pream...
The absolute best and worst-sounding CD you own ?
Best sounding - Alan Parsons Project: The Definitive Collection. Superb remastering of some great songs.Worst Sounding - Concrete Blond: Bloodletting. One of my favorites, musically, but recording wise, have never heard a more abysmal sound.
What is your system - classical and folk.
I mostly listen to classical music nowadays and when I was putting my system together some years back, I always came back to Spendors when auditioning speakers. Sure, other speakers had cleaner highs, better bass, imaged better, had better soundst...
Your ONE all time favorite love song?
I have a few and can't pick one favorite. Mine areThe way you look tonight - Frank SinatraSomeone to watch over me - Blossom DeariePorgy - Nina SimoneMaybe I'm amazed - Paul McCartney
Vivaldi fans lend me your ears for a moment...
I will third Auaarons' recommendation. "L'estro Armonico" and Nigel Kennedy comes close, but no one matches the sheer exuberance of Fabio Biondi, especially in that 3rd movement of Summer.
Working backwards...
Unlike B&W's, Spendors aren't exactly current hungry. The 1/2s are a nominal 89 or 90db and present a very stable 8ohms to the amp, meaning you don't exactly need a lot of power. I used to run a McCormack 0.5 dlx on my Spendor 2/3s and liked i...
classical suggestions
CarlHow allergic are you to mono and/or less than great sounding recordings? My recommendations will vary greatly depending on your preference. Following are great performances with at least good sonics, so should be safe:Beethoven 5&7th sym. ...
Rush remasters- thumbs up.
Voodoochile,Perhaps you're thinking of "YYZ" on Exit...Stage Left?
Brahms and Tchaikovsky
Yes, both of Horowitz/Toscanini CDs are pretty dismal sounding, but performance wise, Horowitz eclipses Argerich in the pyrotechnics (the 1943 slightly more so than 1941).Both readily available at Tower and I assume other establishments.
Brahms and Tchaikovsky
I do own the Argerich/Kondrashin/Phillips, which I bought for Rachmaninoff PC 3. You are quite right that her performance is incindiary. However, for my taste, she sacrifices too much of the music for her admittedly awesome technical virtuosity.IM...
Brahms and Tchaikovsky
My recommendation for Brahms 3 & 4 Sym. in good sound:Dresden Staatskapelle/Kurt Sanderling/Eurodisc (BMG Classics) - economical choice as well as this is a complete set of 1 - 4 on 3 disks for a paltry sum of $13 and performances are stupendo...
