Moving from L.A. to Sydney; The Voltage Issue
Frequency won't be a problem. For voltage the best answer is to convert the units to 240 volts - some equipment allows this by altering some internal jumpers in the power supply. Second choice is to use a step down transformer. Add up the total po...
Low Pass Filter Wasting Power?
Above its cutoff frequency the low pass filter looks like a high impedance to the amp. Thus the amp won't be driving significant current into the load at these frequencies and won't expend power.
WADIA 9
I think you mean the 900 aseries rather than the 9, which was produced in the mid 90's. If Wadia continues its stealth marketing program we won't know what it is until it has been discontinued for 2 years.
Headphones powered by a preamp output?
The XLR outputs will not deliver significant power to the headphones. You'll need a headphone amp.
Pre amp for VTL450's and Wadia 9
I'm running the 7/9 combo into a Krell KRC-HR, which in turn drives a pair of Pass Aleph 1.2 monoblocks. It's a nice combination. I've run the 9 both single ended and balanced, and it definitely sounds better balanced. I agree with you that it sou...
need help on balanced interconnect connections
The "Japanese" pinout connection for balanced connections is the opposite of the US standard - it swaps the "hot" and "cold" pins. A standard balanced cable will work, but the absolute polarity (aka "phase") of the source will be inverted. Pick an...
Ultimate Amplifier for the next 20 Years
I'm also using a pair of Apogee Studio Grands. They are really a great pair of speakers. The good news is that the Studio Grand ribbons are a pretty benign load. They come in around 6 mostly resistive ohms with little variation across the audible ...
Surge supression on attena for Tuner???
You definitely want a lightning arrester in the antenna line - ideally located where the cable enters the house.I don't think that the surge supressor in the Power Director is sufficient protection.
Suggestions for bang for your buck speaker cables
Don't laugh, but recently Absolute Sound did a speaker cable shootout. One of the entries was a pair of cables homemade from 10 gauge extension cord from Home Depot. It did extremely well. It's a lot cheaper than commercial stuff, and pretty cheap...
Audio Research LS10
My local dealer had one two years ago. I took it home for an audition. When I tried it, a problem surfaced - there was no isolation between inputs - in other words a signal applied to input x was still quite audible when another input was selected...

How about sharing the info?
Noticed the Patriot Act's effects on PayPal?
Wasn't it Ben Franklin who said something to the effect of "Those who give up a little liberty for temporary safety soon have neither liberty nor safety"?
Why are CDs so hard to open?
I use a little gizmo I bought for a couple of bucks at a local CD store to open CDs. It has a channel that fits over an edge of the CD and has an internal blade. You simple slide it along the edge with the sticky label. It slices through the plast...
Pass Labs Aleph Question
I'm currently using Aleph 1.2 monoblocks on Apogee Studio Grand ribbon speakers (with Aragon Palladium II monos on the subwoofers). These run around 5-6 ohms. Prior to my acquisition of the Studio Grands I ran them with Apogee Duetta Signatures (3...
Do you need a special soldering iron?
Vman, thanks for the update. You're right about the iron wattage - lower is better. Actually my tool of choice is a temperature controlled iron. These use a sensor at the iron tip and deliver just enough power to keep it at the right temperature. ...
