Keith - I agree with this: What I've learned is the Defs have a slight inherent leanness --and therefore pair best with a warmer than neutral amplifier. Not Cary 805 euphonic warm, but definitely not a cool or "neutral" sounding amp.

GSM - the Duelands are not a must have upgrade. I "believe" they were worth it for me, but I can't be absolutely sure for the reasons stated above. They do not, in any way, change the inherent qualities of the Def4's that we have come to love. As ...

Allie - I have a large space as well, ~6,000 cubic feet, not including the open staircase up to the main floor. To this: Played small chamber music beautifully but put horns or Count Basie on and no way. I have been thinking I would need some para...

Spirit - to this: Jordan, do you ascribe the lack of change with the cap upgrade to a simple burn-in issue, like spkr cables needing hundreds of hours, or the stock caps used in the Def4s being sufficiently good anyway?I say that any of which you ...

Allie - if it were me and $5500 was my limit for an amp, I'd buy a pair of Coincident Frankensteins Mk2 and never look back. They appear to respond well to DAC-direct set ups and unless you have a massive or highly damped space and/or listen at cr...

Spirit - I really haven't noticed any changes due the Duelands, but that is not to say they may not be happening. The process just may be really slow. I can say that when I do get a chance to listen these days, I just kick back and enjoy with litt...

Spirit - the gain of the amp determines where your volume pot is set for a given SPL at the listening position. I would bet that if you turn the pot all the way up on the Audions, that your preamp volume pot will be much lower. You really have a n...

I'm not sure if I've explained very well what seemed to be like a low frequency bias in the presentation of the NATs. Since treble was all accounted for, and better than SS on reflection, I guess this might be described as an alteration in the cen...

Oops...just realized you asked for any DISadvantages to running a 70w versus 25w amp. I see no disadvantage.

Is there any DISDAVANTAGE to running 70W/ch SETS (NAT) as opposed to 25W/ch (Audion) in a listening space 27'x22'x13'?70w/ch versus 25w/ch is only a 4dB difference. Put in context, with 101dB speakers, a 25w/ch gives you about 115dB. Adding about...

Spirit - I do not detect any downward tilted frequency balance between the two SET's I own and my OTL or past solid state amps. I do detect what sounds like a slight bump with some solid state amps. The extra energy that I detect in many very good...

Hi Steve, the caps were Dueland VSF at 1uF (I think?). They replaced the standard Mundorphs, silver and oil I believe. The Frankensteins are really good, but I must say I'm listening more to the Audions. The extra 5dB of headroom of the Audions is...

I installed the Duelands in my Mk4's. I "believe" that there is more "air" around certain instruments and I perceive less grain in the upper registers, bowed strings in particular. However, I would not describe it as dramatic and it very well coul...
Current amp vs Voltage amp
Re. the math problem you cited, yes, I did get those values. So? The amps I'm thinking of are capable of generating these kinds of wattages & sounding musical at the same time. Indeed that's what I was thinking in the 1st place when I wrote t...

Spirit, the Atma-Sphere's are very synergistic with the Definitions. The transparency, resolution, and dynamics are very good, though they aren't "tight" like big SS on the Defs. Personally, I don't find the "tight bass" as textural or as believab...
