System Gain, Volume, and component matching?
Bob, looks like you're right...dB=10log(Po/Pi) and since P is proportional to V^2, it becomes dB=2*10log(Vo/Vi). Thanks for the correction! Ok, that's an order of magnitude difference: 400V to 40V. This makes much more sense, though 40V is still w...
System Gain, Volume, and component matching?
Hi Drubin...how to you like your APL Marantz with the AKM DACS and new upsampler? Also, are the Rowland 201's and Primaluna amps competitive in quality? I'm going to take your advice and hold on to the Rowland until I'm sure I have enough gain...a...
System Gain, Volume, and component matching?
Thanks for the responses so far! Bob, I think the conversion is Bel=log(Vo/Vi), so dB=10log(Vo/Vi), right? So, 20db gain with Vi = 4V from APL should be: 20=10log(Vo/4) => Vo=400V. Isn't this right? I love the Rowland BTW, it is very smooth, cl...
Anyone hear the new Consonance M15 speaker yet?
Jaybo, why do you say that "they are never quite right"? My maggies do classical and jazz decently and female vocals very well; however, rock is not done so well. Fortunately for me, I mainly listen to blues, female vocals and jazz. From the SET cr...
What's Absolute Best Upsampling CD Player $2K-$3K?
Tvad, a small correction...Alex primarily uses the "upsampling" board to convert 16bit to 24bit words before going to the digital filter. At first he synchronously oversampled to 88.2kHz, but now has decided it sounds best at 44.1kHz...just using ...
Maggies 3.6 vs 20.1
Hey Rooze, how will you implement the DEQX? Do you just run the actively x-overed high/low through the passive x-over for the maggies or do you need to wire this directly to the individual drivers, bypassing the passive x-overs? Sorry for my ignor...
Why "Cryo" anything?
Excellent post, Lugnut...I figured this debate was just getting us all a bit too excited.I do differ from your opinion that the "naysayers" are suggesting that there is no difference in sound. Perhaps I'm only speaking for myself (I don't think so...
Why "Cryo" anything?
Geoffkait, actually I think you just made Ejliu's point: a discussion between those that have tried cryo treatment and hear the difference and those that have not tried it, yet demand a scientific explanation - one that is not available, at least ...
Why "Cryo" anything?
Lugnut, I didn’t suggest the thread should be limited. I questioned why others chose to limit the discussion by suggesting that “if it sounds better, don’t worry about why”. Whether you like it or not, that IS a limiting statement!! This particula...
Why "Cryo" anything?
This is an interesting thread. I’m not really sure why some are taking the stance that “if it sounds better, don’t worry about why”? This is the Tech Talk forum and I believe the point for Ejliu starting this thread was to probe if anyone has a so...
McIntosh 501 or 602 for Magnepan 20.1
I have heard the 3.6's with the McIntosh 501's...sounded very good, relaxed, smooth, deep natural bass, and airy highs. Didn't sound like it was breaking a sweat even at higher SPL's. I wasn't able to compare the 501's directly to my Parasound JC1...
Parasound JC1's vs. Sim Audio W10
Thanks for your input, Bob! I own a pair of JC1's and love them with my Magnepan's.It's usually reported that most high-end companies do extensive listening to select parts, design, etc. How do long breakin parts factor into this process? It seems...
APL 3910 owners, has anyone tried APL upsampler?
Sean, you're probably confusing him with me. My only points on upsampling is that the name "upsampling" is strictly a marketing term, not a technical one. From a technical standpoint it is simply "oversampling". Secondly, oversampling/upsampling b...
Oversampling vs. Upsampling
Emile, thank you for the link to the dcs sales tutorial...I think this document proves the point regarding marketing hype. I particularly like the end of the summary. Everybody else is still in the dark ages, using Fourier Transforms in a feeble a...
Oversampling vs. Upsampling
Gy4, as I'm sure you've figured out, upsampling and oversampling are the exact same thing. Upsampling is simply a marketing term and 96kHz and 192kHz "upsampling" were used specifically to imply that regular 16bit/44.1kHz CD's could achieve some o...
