How did you get into vinyl?
Vinyl got into me when I started pressing records at the world's first audiophile pressing plant way back in 1973, while in high school (btw they are STILL in business). I got so into my job I became the Quality Manager and was very fortunate to d...
Name a couple of HOLY GRAIL LPs
James Newton Howard & Friends, Direct-to-Disc. Issued in 1983 (Sheffield Lab 23). If you happen across a copy pay ANYTHING to own it. This is the absolute pinnacle representation of the art of pre-digital recording.
Time between playing the same LP
Viridian, would you also not be interested in my "Tammy Faye Baker's Greatest Hits" Lp? I've only played it once in the last 24,000 hours...
Brag About Your Vinyl Collection
I have two one-of-a-kind Lp's. Sheffield Direct-to-disk Lincoln Mayorga. One album is comprised of two side A's back to back, the other is two side B's. Don't ask me why I did it... it was 1973 and I was still in high school working at the pressin...
Time between playing the same LP
I used to make these things called LP's at the finest pressing plant in the world, Record Technolgy, Inc. Whoever came up with this notion was on some pretty good smoke. Play it again and again Sam.
The AR turntable
I owned one of these; wish I still had it.
Anyone else ever experiment with wet playback?
And alas, that gunk accumulation is the reason you cannot play a previously wet-played LP dry again. Back in the days when I could take home as many Sheffield Direct Discs, MFSL's, Wilson Audio LP's etc. as I pleased hot off the press, I would ear...
Audiophile turntables of the 60's and 70's
Philips GA212 or 312. Positively.
Name a couple of HOLY GRAIL LPs
First Phoebe Snow LP, especially the song "Poetry Man".
Anyone else ever experiment with wet playback?
A better wetting agent is Photoflo; it is non-detergent. As used in photographic developing. Talk about cetrifugal force... 78rpm????
Anyone else ever experiment with wet playback?
I have had good results w/de-ionized water. Bear in mind the LP has a natural "trough" - the recessed playing area originally designed to prevent scratching from stacking LPs on a changer. This holds the liquid nicely. You may experience a bit of ...
Anyone else ever experiment with wet playback?
My sympathies, Jkalman (I am happily divorced). It's OK though... she is a casino General Manager and I get half her $$$$. What pull Crem1? There is undoubtedly LESS friction with liquid immersion. Am I missing something? FYI I was the Quality Mgr...
Anyone else ever experiment with wet playback?
Adavantages are vastly reduced friction (ever seen how cooling fluid is used during metal machining?). Also the noise floor is extremely low, as particulate matter becomes suspended and not part of the record's surface. Disadvantages are potential...
Static on Vinyl
Simply hold the lp on edge, against the inside of your hand and chest. With your free hand, tap the label area several times (sharply - like you mean business), then proceed to play the record. You will enjoy a static-free performance every time.
What made you select "audio" as your hobby
This hobby selected ME. In high school I got a job pressing records at the world's only (at that time) audiophile pressing plant. I soon became the Quality Manager. As a result of this experience I can honestly say there are probably less than 10 ...
