Anyone know of a nice closed-shelf cd cabinet?
Thanks for the sorice suggestions! I should have posed this question at audiogon long ago. I noted that one can mix and match bookshelf and cd units -I had just about decided to have a cabinet builder make a similar set up for me, but you never re...
Does it matter where a CD is manufactured?
I will note that sugarbrie's response to the comments of Hifimaniac seem to be quite appropriate. One must compare apples to apples and not assume something sounds better because the package is more attractive. And of course, one should expect tha...
Does it matter where a CD is manufactured?
There have always been rumors that cd's manufactured in Germany, Japan, etc. are superior to US discs, etc., but I think it is just a holdover from the old days when import lp's were a big deal (indeed, many imports were pressed in limited numbers...
FM Reception question, please
Ryanmhl is right on the mark. I have found identical results with a whip antenna and with the $15 Radio Shack omnidirectional antenna mounted in an attic - why pay more for a whip. A tuner with dual antenna inputs is the way to go; try using both ...
upsampling
I'll leave it to others to describe the technical details of upsampling, but, the unit you describe can be set in 44.1 mode with hdcd (if an hdcd disc) or in upsampling mode. You can upsample any cd, but if you upsample an hdcd disc, you will bypa...
Whats the best used tuner for under 1000
I agree with both posts above. A digital tuner has the advantage of many preset stations. Read up on the TIC page linked above. (I use and recommend the Don Scott Marantz, but the MD unit is nice as well - what a quandry).
Tips needed for best FM reception
Does your MD have dual antenna inputs? I have two on my tuner and run one omnidirectional, and one multi-element directional antenna to my unfinished attic. I point the directional antenna towards my most used tower(s) and switch to unidirectional...
advice about Cary & McIntosh needed ...
A Watt (W) is a unit of energy per unit time. More specifically, 1 W = 1 Joule/second, where 1 Joule (J) = 1 Newton meter (N m). Thus, 1W = 1W and it is not possible for a tube watt to be "somehow stronger"! Now, it may be possible for the adverti...
Problems with Cary 303-200
Check out the ad for a cary cdp posted on 2/24 by hifimatt - the description of the unit comments on this. I have been wondering whether this malfunction is common.
Please help I have a strange grounding problem
What is your antenna situation? If you improve the reception, it may solve your problem. A good attic or roof-mount directional antenna with a rotor is always a good idea.
musical fidelity gear
I recently pondered the same questions and went with the A3cr pre/power combo after listening to all in a shop with the same speaker I own. The current price on the A3cr is a bargain now as compared to the new 3.2, although the integrated units ha...
Don Scott Specially Modified Marantz Tuner?
I recently purchased a Marantz ST6000 modified by Don Scott. He is honest and great to work with, and I highly recommend this unit. I live in a rural mountainous area and have interest only in stations 30-120+ miles distant and thus require a tune...
Review: B & W Loudspeakers CDM-9nt Speaker
I purchased the CDM 9NT loudspeakers within the last two months as part of my first full system upgrade in 17 years (time to get rid of the old college stuff). I have been extremely pleased with the detail, imaging, and clarity of the sound. I was...
