To tone control or not to tone control Tone controls are a necessity on alot of music. All you naysayers dead against them are correct from a textbook standpoint, but you must understand that all music is not Lyrita, RCA Living Stereo, Mercury etc. Put tone controls on those and you wil...
The best speaker you ever heard? Hey Plasmatronic. I clearly remember the time Dr. Alan Hill came to Barclay Recordng back in 1979 to set them up. Absolutely the most bizzare product in audio history. But the sound...ah that was memorable, it will stay with me 4-ever. Too bad lig...
XLR vs. RCA Hi Detlof. Been following your comments on recent posts and wanted to tell you,I think your a class act. Nice work on the Musicality issue.Just a notice for all of you on this thread to watch out for XLR/Balanced compatability between true balance...
SME III Tonearm: Classic or Dinosaur? The SME III and 3009 ,to my ears, was better sound (with cartridges in their compiance comfort zones), than the highly praised SME V. That model always exhibited a rather thickish tone, for lackof a better word. The SME III may still be the best cho...
Old Philips CD as transport or new playe Elizabeth, you are absolutely right on about the late 80s, early 90s Sony transports, they were like bankvaults in construction. Sonically, not bad either. There are real world everyday usage issues like access time, reliability and chassis rigidity...
Jazz and Acoustic Guitar recommendation Just wanted to say one would be wise to heed Sdcampbell's recommendations; and dont miss the Charlie Bird/Laurindo Almeida LP/CD duets on Concord Picante. They are terrific together. I very much agree the work by Wes Montgomery on Riverside is his...
cd players with volume control Well sir, the data is from 12 years ago;right about the time I abandoned the direct in approach. The data is from my personal experience. The cd player at the time was the Sony 707esd, a very fine unit I might add. The amplifiers were ARC tube uni...
cd players with volume control If you decide to run directly from cd to power amp, there will be times that you will not be able to achieve enough gain. There are many recordings cut at too low a level to be able to bypass a gain stage. Just something to think about.
Tube biasing for ARC and fender equipmen John, The 6L6/ 5881 tube In one of my ARC amps I set for .65ma. I have had no problems at this heater setting. Of course even better sound is attainable at higher ma. settings, but MELTDOWN will occur inside the tube. The KT-88 tube is generally mo...
What causes listener fatique? cure? I have to agree with Trelja on this one. Historically, metallic type tweeters have been prone to razor sharp detail, but also to a substantial amount of brightness. At first you say "I've uncovered a wealth of new detail", but then the reality that...
Changing Amps?? Are you Sure?? Thanks to all of you for your thougtful insights. Thank you Detlof for the points mention. I really feel that audio manufacturers today have lost sight of reality. There was a time in the late 70s,that one could enter a hi end audio dealer and hav...
Electrostatic or Dynamic I go through it all the time. The only answer is dual ownership. Don't let anyone tell you its all available in one brand. It isn't.
A most unlikely cable convert There is no question that cabe sounds different.Anyone who states tha the sound is identical, does not hear the difference because they don't want to hear it.This aside, there is no excuse for the flat out rip-off prices. My AMPEX ATR-100 Master Re...
Coltrane. Can we talk? To really hear Trane at his most powerful, try "Live at the Vanguard." His interplay with Eric Dolphy is something of real lasting value. Although I am not a fan of Dolphy(his critically acclaimed "Out To Lunch" even does not suit me),there was th...
Need help from Quad ESL 63 owners. The ESL-63 and Audio Research equipment is a match that can yeild spectacular results on voice, jazz, chamber and small scale symphonic work. I can tell you that the SP-8 MK-1 and MK-2 do not work particularly well with the 63. Although it does mu... |
