Magnepan Unitrac+Denon 103 to need a turntable
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but have you listened to the unitrac and the denon. On paper it's not a good match. I was an original unitrac owner around 1980 and the arm works best with high compliance cartridges(the denon is a low compliance ca...
Koetsu cartridges - myth or reality?
What arms would you reccomend for a Koetsu? In particular are their older or less popular arms, ie. high mass, that you would reccomend that would be considerided a bargain, less tha $2000?
Joule 150A MKII versus Atma-sphere Preamps
I've been a long time user of MP3/AS30. Prior to the MP3 I had a AI M3(single ended) as my preamp running to the AS30.The combo worked fine with no issues. The MP3 was a sgnificant stepup but I suspect that's because the MP3 is a better preamp and...
STEP UP transformers ??
AI has an excellent high gain moving coil "gold" phono board for the M3a that goes for around $500. It's a SS board that is added to the existing phono stage. It's very nice sounding and was designed by John Curl. I believe it raises the total pho...
To damp or not to damp JMW-9 Sig ?
I'm a long term TNT/JMW-10 owner. The issue of damping is very cartridge dependent. In general the high compliance catridges like the benz and the grado's benefit from some damping. Low compliance cartridges do not. When I had a grado reference I ...
Amp for Quad ESL 57
Has anyone used an Atmasphere S30 with a Quad 57? Your comments about the synergy would be appreciated.Do the amp requirments change for stacked Quads? Thanks, Frank
Ground Hum
Did you have the hum like you do now when you used the cart. in a different system? If not, it's doubtful it's the cartridge.I know you've tried lot's of different phono cables, but where any of them shielded? If your not using a shielded cable it...
Ground Hum
Is the cartridge new? Has the hum alway's been there with this cartridge? Have you used the turntable/arm with a different cart. or the cart. with a different turntable? Can't help wondering if the cart. has an open loop(defective). If so, no amoun...
Who Imports and sevices Koetsu's Now?
I would think that any of the current koetsu dealers particualy the online dealers such as, acoustic sounds, the needle doctor, or music direct would probably have some idea what's going on.In lieu of that, if you need a cartrige rebuilt or repair...
Anyone know of a reasonable Tonearm Cable??
Actually, it's current price is $525 din-rca/xlr, $600 for rca-rca or xlr-xlr. When I bought mine a few years ago it was in the $400 range. Stil, resonablly priced, as cables go, and offers a lot for the ptice IMHO.Another less costly option would...
Anyone know of a reasonable Tonearm Cable??
Agree with Nagarch, It would be helpful to know what you consider the stratosphere. I'm currently using the breeze phono cable from Silver audio with a Grado ref(VPI version 1.5mv)/JMW10/TNT with excellent results. It is very fast and transparent ...
Atma Sphere MP 3 pre-amp compared to
I have owned the MP3 with the phono for several years. It is a terrific preamp capable of outstanding sound. It is relativly quiet for a tube preamp but I doubt it will ever be as quiet as the solid-state, battery powered PHD. I certainly wouldn't...
CONRAD JOHNSON MV50 Owners, anyone outthere?
I owned an MV50 many years ago. Ran it with Rodgers LS3/5A's and Vandersteen 2Ci's. Their used to be an upgrade by the facory, to an MV52 which entails replacing the power supply capacitors will all polypropylene capacitors. I wouldn't be surprise...
VPI SDS speed question
This is perfectly fine. I noticed the same thing when I changed to the mk5 bearing and platter and stopped using the tripod system/pully. Definatly set the SDS voltage via the strobe disk and enjoy.
VAC Phono in Avatar Super
2.5mv should be plenty for this moving magnet phono stage. I have used cartridges with 1.5mv into phono stages with similar gain without excessive noise or the need to turn the volume way up. Something is wrong with the phono stage, grounding sche...
