Looking for moderate priced MC phono pre
I'm hearing some very good reports about the AQvox 2CI from friends in continental Europe. It's sold direct from Germany with a no-risk trial period. I'll be hearing one next week so will report back further.Otherwise, I'd be inclined to favor the...
Opus 3 tonearm
I've heard a couple, both fitted with Musicmaker III carts, but in unfamiliar systems, so it's hard to say what effect the arm was having in relation to the other components. I thought the imagaging and detail resolution were very good, there was ...
Real world experience with the Funk or Funk V TT
It might be more helpful to the OP if you answered his question rather than questioning my hearing. (Btw my hearing is excellent thanks). I'm pleased that you're happy with your purchase and it satisfies your needs.I would reckon that a used Garra...
Anybody heard the new EAR turntable?
Yes, I heard it at the London Show last October. It retails at £7700, which is a very high price tag. It was fitted with an Ortofon Kontrapunkt B, iirc and sounded pleasant enough but I didn't sense magic. It's a nice piece of watch maker's sculpt...
Real world experience with the Funk or Funk V TT
What do you expect of a review of a product that is advertised in their magazine?I've examined one closely at a show and wasn't very impressed - it's not well finished and looks too expensive. I wasn't impressed with how it sounded either - if you...
Choosing a turntable....
I agree with Aoliviero, I wouldn't have an SME arm - they tend to be bass heavy but very bloated and flabby. They sound acceptable on classical music but poor on all other genres. You can upgrade the wiring and cable so why not just go for a Tri-p...
Teres, Galibier and Redpoint
Congratulations on reaching your decision. You're right about the value for money. And you're also right about the journey - the real fun will start in a few months when your table arrives.Have you decided on arm and cartridge?
Choosing a turntable....
If you're looking for a turntable that gets you closer to the music with minimal colorations then I suggest you audition the Teres and Galibier tables. Both are sold direct, so offer stunning value for money - excellent materials, engineered for a...
Teres, Galibier and Redpoint
Xsheaffer, I agree that if you hear significant differences and clearly favor one table then it would not make sense to go back. My interpretation of Dan's experience was that he liked the Galibier then scaled the Teres hierarchy - which was somew...
Teres, Galibier and Redpoint
Great thread - excellent insights into the challenges of system synergy. I agree with Doug and Thom about demo room first impressions.I made the trip to Colorado a year ago and heard Galibier first. Thom was running a Lyra Titan on his Schröder Re...
Teres, Galibier and Redpoint
I just found this thread and the references to my comments on my audition of the Teres 360 and Galibier tables last year.First, I've owned Koetsu cartridges for 20 years and have a fond affection for their lushness. When I heard the Teres dem, the...
What can I improve in my turntable setup?
Rotary 914, you need to tell us some more so that we can help you.Are you happy with how your system sounds using another source - e.g. cd or tuner?Have you experimented with speaker positions? Moving them a few feet further towards or away from y...
best turntable under $5k
Clio09 makes a good point about the budget covering arm and cart too. I would still advocate the Galibier at $4500 because that will last a lifetime.A good table will give rock solid speed stability which is fundamental to hearing timing, timbre a...
best turntable under $5k
Best under $5k that I've heard is the Galibier Ascent Alu. The mid-range Teres tables tend to smear the image and lose impact on the leading edge of transients. The 360 is better but it's twice what you want to spend. With a PVC platter the Galibi...
Any thoughts on the Avid Acutus?
I don't understand why you are contemplating changing the whole rig! Why not try a different cartridge first to move the sonic signature in the direction you're seeking (assuming that your phono stage is up to the task). One of the Zyx range (R100 ...
