Oracle Delphi II v Linn Axis or vica versa
The Oracle, would definitely be the better sounding table, if properly setup. Because it is spring suspended, it needs a careful setup. The Axis, was a plug n play design. The only weakness, with the Oracle, was it's speed control. This can be ame...
How do you know when preamp tubes go bad?
Usually the sound gets thin, dull, and lifeless, when tubes are nearing the end of their useful life. You lose dynamics, the bass get soft, and loose, and the highs seem rolled off. Most times, it is so gradual, that you don't notice, till you ins...
How do I buy tubes?
I posted this thread, because I wanted to know what the members thought, about how to purchase tubes. Whether one should purchase, by the name printed on the tube, or by what manufacturer, actually made the tube? I know what I think, I'm intereste...
Tubes: 12AU7A or 12AX7 or can one mix them?
A 12AU7, and a 12AX7, both uses the same filament(heater) voltage, 12.6 volts. Any heater that is designed for a 12AU7, will do just fine, for a 12AX7. Yes, you might get distortion, or a unbalanced gain, but you will not fry a 12AU7, or 12AX7, in...
Tubes: 12AU7A or 12AX7 or can one mix them?
Although the amp, most likely would work, with 5 of either type, it would be best, to run the amp, with the tube complement, that it was designed for. The gain, of a 12AX7, is higher, than that of a 12AU7. Most likely, the gain stages, depend on t...
Audio Research, What tubes work best in Pre-amp
Huge soundstage and bass, Amperex. Lots of high frequency air, tight bass, and transparency, Siemens. Warmth, richness, Telefunken, or Mullard. If you wish to get, as close, to the ideal tube, as you can, try a combination, of the above tubes. Tub...
Bi-amping ML Aerius i's.
I use tubes, on my panel, ML Sequel ll, and solid state, on the woofer, and no external crossover. I bi-amp them, with the passive crossover, in the speaker. I think they sound magical. If anything, you might need more watts, or current, on the wo...
Mixing new and NOS tubes OK?
As long as the tubes, are electrically identical,(same family) there is no reason, that mixing, would not work. The circuit only sees, the electrical charateristics, of the tubes, not who's name, is printed on them.
Any DIYer s out there ?
Iv'e modified, or built, everything, in my system, with the exception, of the phonocable, cartridge, and tonearm. The biggest improvement, to my system, was when I built, tubetraps, ala Jon Rische. Which leads me to beleive, that room acoustics, a...
who mfg valvo tubes?
Phillips bought Valvo, so a lot of Valvo tubes, were made by Phillips, to Phillips specs. The only true Valvos, I've seen, were distinguished by their tall bottle. But Phillips, made some great sounding tubes.
How to test those NOS tubes
As far as testing tubes, for noise, a George Kaye Noise tester, is the solution. It lets you hear, the actual noise, a tube makes. Most testers, are not reliable, in their noise testing. A better solution, is to match them, with the tester, and th...
CAN Bi-Amping been done Correctly?
I don't know if it can be done "correctly", as I don't know what "correctly" is. But if you are asking, if you can have glorious sonics, by bi-amping Martin Logans, yes. I use Curcio modified MKlll's, on the panel, and solid state, on the bass. Wi...
Strategies for preserving tube life
No one, as of yet, has come up with a deinitive statement, on whether leaving them on, will make them last longer, or continuously cycling them on, and off, will last longer. The manufacturers, gave a 10,000 hour, minimum service life, for these t...
'crackling'when using volume ctrl
A lot of times, crackling, in the volume control, is indicative, of a bad eletrolytic capacitor, some where, in the circuit.
Whats the downside of leaving ones amps on allways
The downside, is the wear on your amps occur, even when, you are not listening, and the cost of electricity. The wear, is minimal, with solid state gear, but with tube power amps, it will reduce the time, of tube replacement, to approx. 1/4. If th...
