Chicago, the Benchmark DAC1 is the best...if you like bland and thin sound.To the OP, check out W4S and Burson's new DAC, both sound very good for the $.

Unless it's horn loaded, the transition between a 1" dome tweeter and 8" woofer is not a smooth one, off axis response will suffer in the crossover region.

Using a "simulated" crossover may get you close, but will not be perfect, as measurements should be taken on the finished speaker baffle.Check out Clearwave Audio Design and Selah Audio. Both offer quality kits that sound exceptional. Madisound's ...

A pair of capable monitors and multiple subs will have less peaks and nulls in the bass region.

Bill, I would not call Crescendos laid back. Neutral would be a better description as they have plenty of detail and sparkle, but without a hint of harshness. I also believe they come with spikes.

That 13uf electrolytic cap is 20% tolerance, a 12uf would probably be fine. 
DACs as preamps: Benchmark HDR vs Wyred4Sound DAC2
HT Bypass is unaffected by the DAC-2's volume control. I'm not sure I would recommend it, but you could use a Goldpoint Passive Attenuator between your other source and the DAC-2 bypass input, it may sound fine.
