Started with $1k speakers … what now? i.e. just listed, excellent speakers, gorgeous rosewood, $2,000. but only 87db sensitivity. says perfect, I would ask for photos of drivers with grilles off, see surrounds of drivers with cones. https://www.ebay.com/itm/325982859403 see...
Started with $1k speakers … what now? Without a doubt, you can definitely get improved sound beyond those small 2 way speakers within your budget. I always recommend trying to find efficient (high sensitivity 90 or above), so less amp power is needed. That keeps the amp size/weight/c...
Are there any issues with connecting speaker wire in this manner? Vintage Amps used bare wires, wrapped around a screw. Note: there was a separate flat piece of metal, that made good pressure on the wire without twisting the wires when tightening. Vintage McIntosh Speaker Terminals, the metal tab was spring lo...

Tube Integrated Amp Recommendation I wanted a modern tube amp (remote volume) that sounded as good as my Fisher 80az mono blocks. amp or integrated (keeps options open). I took a chance on a used Cayin A88T, usa 120v. Love it. based on very positive 6moons review. (6 moons site is...
Are there any issues with connecting speaker wire in this manner? Long ago I tried solid core wire under the floor in the crawl space for the rear surround and sub, figuring, long runs, ... Waste of time, didn’t sound that good, and who cares for rear surround and sub perfection anyway. The wire is very stiff, ...
Obvious Epiphany I am estimating my speakers are around the same130 lb weight. These dual wheel casters are surface mounted. I got the bug to upgrade the wheels, but it backfired. I found my furniture grade Dual Wheel caster’s axel does not wobble like s...
Obvious Epiphany Wow, you have tapped into several of my ’pet peeves’ 1. equipment without balance controls, and 2. speakers without level controls for the individual drivers (typically volume up/dn relative to the woofer). 3. angle of dispersion, both vertic...
Accurate Sibilants: The Ultimate Audio Challenge? I read a Frank Sinatra book, he says he was having trouble with sibilants. He went backstage and asked Pavarotti for advice. Pavarotti smiled, said: "You just shutta your mouth." Many people do not know how hard Sinatra worked to become such a g...
Favorite Obscure Rock Song Mick Jagger, Going Home, on Aftermath: 11 minutes of amazing vocal performance. Don't know about streaming sound, awesome on LP, CD, R2R
SUT experience adrianleewelch OP "The preamp is a C47, not a 27. It’s a modern unit" What Saturday Night Live character said "nevermind"? Perhaps someone following along will benefit from my error and yap.
SUT experience Nice to read that ET-100 SUT sounds good, I often recommend it based on it’s features: PASS for MM, 3 optional impedances/transformer windings, and 3 tonearm inputs front selectable, but never heard one. Often available on hifishark, here’s one o...
annoying speaker rattle or resonance with--Milk Carton Kids CD? That CD, that CD Player ONLY: Some CD Players are more sensitive than others. Unable to read, failure to focus/find a SACD layer, sensitivity to minor damage. I might use a CD lens cleaner just to rule that out, and inspect the CD under good lig...
New TT : Balanced vs. Unbalanced Connection? Ralph, "@elliottbnewcombjr That is a bit odd- XLRs are a lot more rugged than RCAs." I agree, I have many times said I like that XLR positive lock, perhaps desirable for that feature in residential systems with no other advantage. However... |
