16 ohm speakers: any amp sounds better with more resolution. speaker cables less critical.
I made a nice long wooden screwdriver, but Steve's doing it the first time, it's an excuse to meet him.I will bring my toy multimeter for him to throw in the trash or teach me how to use it for bias.
TUBE BIAS, socket to me!
@sokogear You are defending SS, great. You ought to start a new thread about 'tubes are too fussy ...'. I and many others prefer tube sound quality, I find tubes more involving. After many years, I sum it up as simply this: analog gets both t...

lewm, I don't recall indicating surprise modern preamps do not have FM. Few have them now, and anyone can stream FM online. I don't stream digital in my music system, and don't listen to FM in the home theater. Many/most young people never heard...
What did your system look like 30 years ago?
Harvey's NYC 45th street, near 5th avenue. I was not aware they had branches, they were medium to high end with active sales, before Sound by Singer ... other smaller boutique shops.

mapman Are those Grolsch bottles? They look darker than the Green ones, did they make a dark beer I wasn't aware of? Grolsch was my 'celebration' beer, couldn't afford it regularly.

What fun to rememberSpeakers: JSE Infinite Slope, Model II. The only speakers I heard at audio shows I liked as much as the ones I had and use now. They were/are the most accurate speakers I ever owned. Preamp and Amp: McIntosh SS C28; McIntosh SS...
Any comments on the quality of replacement Stylus from Pfanstiehl
If it's conical or elliptical, not a high end TT or system, it's probably as good as others, they have been around since before I was born.what cartridge?any reason not to move up to new cartridge, perhaps more advanced stylus shape?
Tube Preamp to go with Bryston SST2 amp and Magnepan 1.7i speakers
mesch I never owned anything using 6sn7. I had to replace 6sn7 in my Cayin amp, It was surprising how much difference in sound the replacements were. My first choice: bad. The Cayin went from wonderful to lifeless. Brent Jesse let me exchange them...

sokogearTubes can be a lot of fuss, IF you are a very fussy person, which I am not. Therefore, for 43 years they have been easy, and I have heard and prefer tubes over SS. Easy.As I mentioned in the original post, I simply spray the controls, swis...
Cartridges for Music Genre’s
luisma31 For a while syntax's joke was on me. I looked the cartridge up, expecting to learn about something fantastic, HUH?
Speaker sensitivity vs SQ
OP,It is about the cost of building/selling/ever decreasing market for large speakers as many have said.I wouldn’t want to pay for the speakers I luckily inherited, and the typically large house with large listening space they would sound best in....
To re-cap or not to re-cap? That is the question
Well now, I have had a resistor or three replaced over the years, never anything more than that. Always checked out by pro when that was done. Still, I always consider 'fixing' or 'upgrading' my vintage stuff, most from 1950's and 60's.Problem...

L Pads are Staying! Full on mid and full on tweet ((similar to removing them) was not good! I messed about with them for quite a while. It is again clear to me that these speakers were designed with the control of mid to woofer and tweeter to mid ...
