Advice on building a dedicated listening room.
The length of the room should be 1.6 times the width, or 24 feet. The 6 X 15 foot area left over could be handy for your workbench and leave plenty of storage space for your cartons. You might want to consider a ceiling height of 9' in the center ...
How many things do you have plugged in?
cfb - It's good to see your wry (or is it rye?) humor once again. Thanks Kelly.
What did you replace your DQ-10's with?
Replaced mine with the original Quad ESLs, Decca ribbon tweeters and Janus woofers. Now using Acoustat 2+2s with a Legacy subwoofer.
Taming/Damping Electrostat Backwave
Room Lenses work wonders behind 'stats. DIY lenses using 5 or 6 tubes are even better or you might want to make noodle lenses. Check out Audio Asylum for info. I recently heard of using bi-fold louvered doors from Home Despot. These are said to be...
What's the best add lib ..: guidelines proposed
I recommend the Golden Retriever as best all around dog. Anything with "Golden" in it's name is made by Cardas. The Lab would be a good choice but "Lab" is, of course, made by Radio Shack.
Subwoofer isolation
2'X 2' X 2" Patio stones painted black look pretty good and do a good job especially with vibra pods between the stones and woofers. Glue a few pieces of felt to the bottoms to protect your floors or use 'pods on both sides of the stones.
Audio vs. Other Reviews
In rating cars, I found the Lamborghini Diablo to be very poor in off-road rock climbing. It was even worse for hauling sheets of plywood home from Home Depot. In rating the Lincoln Locomotive and the Chevrolet Subdivision, I found them both very ...
Can anyone tell me about CD demagnatizers?
Try this sixth grade science experiment: Turn on the water in your bathroom sink until you have a thin stream. Now run a plastic comb through your hair rapidly, several times. Now hold that comb near the stream of water and observe that the stream...
Taking the bad with the good
Many years ago I was a Linn dealer. We referred to the Linn folks as "The Linn Gestapo". As a dealer, it was almost impossible to deal with these snobs and it was a happy day when we discontinued the line. Everyone else we dealt withConrad-Johnson...
Can anyone tell me about CD demagnatizers?
Bulk tape eraser from Radio Shack works better and cost is about 30 bucks. Hold eraser about 1/4 inch from CD, hit the button and slowly move the CD away from the eraser about 3 feet and you're done. Makes a noticable difference in the sound. Try ...
Amps Used With Infinity Rs1..Successfully or....
The Eagle 2A (120 watts/channel)or the very rare Kenwood L09M (300 watt monoblock)would be great choices. Or the Audio Research D-350, which turns up on ebay from time to time. These are all bass amps. Or, believe it or not, the Bose 1801. Mark Le...
Graphic equilizers?
Don't forget that EVERYTHING is a "tone control". It's a matter of synergy. Choosing the right interconnects and speaker cables may tame the top end. Or a tube preamp would probably do it. Beware of Vandersteens as you may be over compensating. I ...
20th Anniversary of CD Today
"Back in the day" I was using a Linn, Fidelity Research arm, Denon 103D and a tube head amp. Total retail - about $1200. Within the past year or two I've finally gotten redbook CD sound that I'm happy with. Total retail for the front end - about $...
Is there an easy to use vcr?
All VCRs are easy to use - if you are under 18 years of age. If not, 2-3 evenings with the manual and you may be able to get the clock to stop flashing 12:00. The older one gets, the worse it is.
Does Theta make two channel DACs anymore?
Very frustrating company. I needed a replacement "manual" which consisted of two sheets of heavy blue paper, printed by computer. They charged me $15.00 plus $4.00 shipping, as they sent it UPS. I thought they had a couple of post offices around t...
