80's System Needs Upgrade
Interconnects have improved much more than speaker cable over the last 20 years(yes, my opinion). Lots of people are going with home depot bulk wire. If you are still on skinny junk, moving up to 12 gauge HD will be a nice improvement. You will pr...
One More Question - Newbie
You need to look at the db rating of a speaker. A speaker that is rated at 89db (decibles) will take twice as much power as a speaker rated at 92db to sound just as loud. You will find that some 3 watt amps with the right speaker will sound louder...

What's your budget on a pre? Do you want vintage or new? Do you need a built in tuner? Do you want tubes or solid state? Do you want remote? Phono stage built in? I think you need a pre before a cd. My choices (remember I don't know what you need)...

Your Denon gear is better than you think! For cartridges, plenty of Ortofons to consider or even a used Goldring 1012? The other suggestions above are great too. Check out ewsaunders.com or needle doctor.com.Your table is nice.Replace the cd player...
Tubeaholics please advise
Did you check out tubesandmore.com?They have NOS for $67 and used for $28.Also, I wouldn't mix different strength tubes if you can help it. From what I know, even if you bias them correctly, the newer/stronger tubes will burn out more quickly than...
Home Theater help?
Do a lot more homework!Find friends with HT.If this is expensive to you, then you will feel stuckwith it once installed. Also, in-walls are fairly permanent since they are cutting custom holes. Don't do it unless you are sure that is what you need....
Newbie to audio
See what else your dad has.I'm sure he would agree that you want to compare amps to learn about the differences.See if he has any tube gear laying around.Bigger isn't always better...Can I check out dad's garage? Please????
Hybrid amps that can play 1 ohm loads
You will find some 2 ohm amps around. However, the only 1 ohm amp I know of is a vintage Grommes G101A. It is a fully tubed amp, amazingly nice, 100/120 watts per channel, taps as low as 1.4ohms.Check Grommes-Precision.com
True bookshelf speaker
I agree with everyone above.Try underwoodhifi.com for a steal on Soliloquy Sat-5's.He's been advertising them on A-gon and is a great dealer.
Questions about tubes
Go to SonicFrontiers.com and find the articles they have posted. One is called "a taste of tubes" These are awesome reading for a beginner.
Best Sounding EL84 - 7189
Tough choice. Fisher, Scott, Lafayette are all great. Personally, I like Pilot 245B. However, the Pilots are usually hard to find and ugly compared to a nice Fisher. Check out mapleshade.com They do restorations on some of these that will make you...
Cheap Turntable Protractor
Don't do the scale on the "cheap" also. You could ruin a nice cartridge
standing waves
Simple solution:Get on your hands and knees and move all around the room. Where the bass sounds best, move the sub there (if you can). That is the simplistic way to find the optimal placement for your sub. This will make your seated position sound...
QUAD vs Martin Logan vs Magnepan
You get what you pay for!MMG's are cheap and may sound really good in the "right" position with the "right" amp in a really narrow sweet spot. Bigger Maggies are a much better comparison to ML & Quad. The ML's are more forgiving of listening po...
what to do cordless phone amplifier problem
Have you tried unplugging the A/C on the phones? You may need a line conditioner or better ground to eliminate this. Are your phone plugs 3 prong? Try a cheater (3 prong to 2 prong adaptor) to avoid ground loops. Your phone system may be grounding...
