Maggie 1.6QR vs 2.7QR
When I decided to buy Magneplanars recently I intended to buy the 2.7 model. It was at the dealer where I discovered that the 2.7 had been discontinued because the 1.6 came so close in performance at much lower cost.
Signal degration over length, source vs. output ?
Kr4...Your SFI preamp looks like a nice unit. They confim that the output stage is "parallel tube with feedback" (not a transistorized line driver as I suspected) providing output impedance which they agree is low for a tube preamp. Looks like you...
Harbeth C7ES vs Maggie 1.6 QR
A suggestion...Don't divorce your Maggies. Just have an affair with some box speakers. Then you can always come home!
SUPER TWEETERS-anybody heard them?
Regarding Low Frequency...In any large hall used for recording there is a very low frequency rumble that is always present even when the musicians have gone out to lunch. It represents the natural frequency of the hall, and is excited by such thin...
Signal degration over length, source vs. output ?
Kr4...I didn't know that you could get 50 ohms output impedance with a tube output stage (usually a 12AU7 cathode follower: 600ohms). What kind of preamp do you have, and did they slip in a transistor line driver?sean...Yes: balanced lines are bet...
How do you get past the pops and hiss of LPs?
Rockinroni...Shure my Shure finds lots of LF on LPs (my subwoofers are flat to 20 HZ). What I said was that these LF sounds are monophonic because of the way LP's are mastered so as to enable "entry level" pickups to play them. This is not necessa...
How do you get past the pops and hiss of LPs?
Rockinroni...Perhaps your phono pickup could track LF vertical modulation of an LP groove, but there isn't any because the recording engineer was producing the LP for people with ordinary playback equipment.Frankly, listening 15 to 20 dB into nois...

Viridian...thanks for the info. I figure the wavelength of a 30Kc signal to be less than 1/2 inch. Even if the Piezo driver were perfect regarding phase, how could one ever get it time-aligned with the other drivers of the system? Maybe the phase ...
Signal degration over length, source vs. output ?
If you have a solid state preamp with output impedance in the 50-100 ohm range, interconnects are not all that critical. As Kr4 says, impedances for this interface (preamp to power amp) are well defined, whereas the power amp-to-speaker impedance ...

I just checked out information on the Tannoy supertweeters, and was surprised by the high price. Considering that you can get a decent tweeter that goes to 20Kc for $100 or less, why should it cost so much more to extend to 30 or 40 Kc? Seems to m...
How do you get past the pops and hiss of LPs?
The best analog master tape recorders used DBX or other kinds of noise suppression, and produced results comparable to digital recorders...no hiss. But digital is a lot easier to work with when it comes to mixdown, so the world has gone digital. I...
Floorstanders over Suspended Hardwood-Help Please
I agree with Danvetc, and believe that you ought to DEcouple speakers from the floor, walls, everything. Best thing is to hang them, but room cosmetics usually prevent this. I know this works with Magneplanars and the Bose 901's, especially if you...

The sense of hearing is remarkable. I don't know what is my present upper frequency range, but at one point although I could not hear a 15Kc tone (pure sine wave), I could very plainly hear the effect of a 15Kc HF filter on broad spectrum sound. I...
Why Linear Tracking never took off?
I just fired up the old Sony PSX-800 for a quick listen. The old Shure V15 pickup tracks perfectly over the complete disc at the minimum downforce setting of 0.5 gram. Try that with your SME! If you have a MC pickup tracking at 2.5 grams I guess i...
How do you get past the pops and hiss of LPs?
Surface noise can be minimized by careful cleaning, and care of the records, but it will never go away completely. Some people learn to listen through it, while others (like me) find it distracting. CD's are the best answer. There were various ele...
