Is solid state on the brink of extinction?
Muralman1...Ok I will step forward. As I have said in other threads, I have purchased Carver ZR1600 digital amps, and I find them to be superb (driving MG1.6 and subwoofers). This confirms opinions posted elsewhere by other reviewers. Also importa...
Is solid state on the brink of extinction?
The "tube sound" and the "solid state sound" relate to the distortion spectrum characteristic of these devices when used in a linear amplifier. In a digital amplifier, the characteristics of the ouput devices, tubes or transistors, are irrelevant ...

Ageless Music?
Scot Joplin's ragtime will still be enjoyed a hundred years from now.Leroy Anderson combined popular music with classical values in a way that is unique. Many people are (were) familiar with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, but the secret is th...

Which Beethoven's symphony do you like the best?
Newbee...As usual this thread has strayed far from its original intent. I did identify my favorite, the 5th, as per the question of the thread. What stirred up all the talk was my suggestion that the others are not up to their godlike reputations,...

What bugs you most about sound quality?
Onhwy61...I guess it is a matter of degree. "Moderate" compression/peak limiting, such as that which is necessary because of limited recording dynamic range, can be undone on playback with pretty good results. And more extreme processing like Dolb...

What bugs you most about sound quality?
Onhwy61...Compression/peak limiting can indeed be undone during playback so as to restore, or even enhance, the original dynamic range. The issue is that with analog logic the playback expansion will always be slightly behind the sound, so that th...
Dayton Audio Interconnects and speaker cables
I recently bought quite a few short ones, 18 inches, for connections between components in the rack. They are well made, and the construction configuration includes the features that are usually touted by the super-expensive wires as contributing ...
Have you ever deceived your wife-audio purchase
Why is this question limited to audio gear?
What bugs you most about sound quality?
I didn't know that compression was so widely dispised! If you really do have such a big problem with it, why not get a hold of a dynamic range expander/peak unlimiter and put it in your playback system?
