upgrading caps -- easy to do?
The main thing you need to do this project is some money. Oh, and a soldering iron and solder.Audiophile grade capacitors and inductors for the typical two-way speaker will set you back about $200 per speaker. The most difficult part of the job is...

Alpha-core or perfect lay inductors for upgrading?
For what it's worth, I just used 10AWG air coils from North Creek to do Magnepan MG1.6. Good results. I considered various foil inductors, but they do have some reliability drawbacks, and I did hear that Magnepan discourages foil inductors. Lower ...
Digitizing LPs: General advice wanted
Of course the simple thing to do is put your LPs onto tape cassettes, using a really good recorder. The only real advantage of digital recording is that you can have a lot of fun on your computer, fixing pops, scratches and other LP woes. If you ar...
Anyone tried using 3 Magnepan MMGs for L-C-R?
Fishcall...Interesting that you mention stands for Maggies. Most people think they are too tall already! I do not currently use stands, but I have experimented in the past, and I think stands are good. Actually, I prefer to suspend speakers in spa...
Anyone tried using 3 Magnepan MMGs for L-C-R?
I have used 3 Maggies for years: MG1.6 at the moment. If your system is used for video the center would obviously need to be alongside the screen, but no big deal.
Are vintage speakers really that good?
jes45@aol.com ...I don't consider Dynaudio or Seas to be garbage. Perhaps you do. I am sure there is someone who likes drivers that are hand made by saffron-robed monks using pressed llama wool cones, laminated with yak milk , and thinks that the ...
Are vintage speakers really that good?
"Improved Technology" often means producability. They are more easily made, and therefore cheaper. "Improved" does not always refer to audio quality.Fashons change with regard to how a speaker should perform. Nowadays, imaging is king. Older speak...
a couple of questions about maggies
Two points of interest...1. I am using CarverPro ZR1600 amps with MG1.6, and the result is superb. The available power, 600 wpc, is ridiculous, and I am sure it is something that "comes with" high power (current delivery perhaps) and not the power...
Maggie 1.6 - Best Amp? Thinking about tubes.
Maggies are great. Tubes are great. The combination is problematical.Maggies like lots of power. My MG1.6 sound better than ever with CarverPro ZR1600 digital amp, and the cost is minimal.
Help: AM antenna and AM reception
The really good AM radios were build before FM became the dominant format. Get an old Stromberg Carlson from the 30's or 40's, and you will hear what AM is really capable of doing. Except for HF response, AM can meet HiFi criteria.I have a set of ...
How to avoid hum and hiss to speakers from amps.
Hiss is a characteristic of tubes. Try different ones. Some will hiss less, but they all do it. It is mostly an annoying academic problem because music at any reasonable level will mask the hiss.Hum is a grounding and shielding issue. Experimaent ...
How badly does price drop for RIP manufacturer?
Roskoe...A Rembrandt merely illustrates a general principle. Would you prefer that I cite a Dynaco Mk3 Tube Power amp? They sell for about six times what I paid when they were new.
how do maggies sound with b&k st-140 amps?
Gmood1...True, Maggies are not known for "thumping" bass, but, I just modified my MG1.6 using a 10AWG air coil inductor, and I think that this may be the solution to that problem. One of the advantages of being 66 years old is that you don't need t...
How badly does price drop for RIP manufacturer?
Depends on the product. Have you priced a Rembrandt lately?
