Will I notice improvement with crossover mods?
sean...I did outfit my speakers with AWG10 coils and fancy capacitors and I do think that performance improved, although I can't say that the slight change I made to the component values (crossover frequency) might not be the reason. However, do yo...
What are your most favorite violin concerti?
This is a "Sophie's Choice" question. It ought not to be answered.
Rotel, Luxman receivers and turners.
I have used a Luxman T14 FM tuner since the early 80's, and consider it superb. It is also beautiful.Luxman was described as the Japanese McIntosh (back when McIntosh was the essence of High End audio).

Jyprez...I accept your comment that I am "fixated" on LP surface noise, but I reject your suggestion that the noise is "supposed". This is why I cited (in the earlier post) the many kinds of hardware that the audio community desparately developed ...
Want more high frequency extension
Mattybumpkin...A word of encouragement! You, like eveyone else, have lost, or will lose high frequency hearing. When tests are run, (at least on me) sine waves of various frequencies are used. I cannot hear a sine wave much over 10 or 12 KHz, but...

Trelja...While I cannot disagree with your preference for low (or zero) feedback amps, I have difficulty believing that the difference you hear derives from greater bandwidth. Reduction of feedback will change the sound so that it reflects the cha...
Review: Bose 201 Series V
Flimsy paper cones can really sound good, and enclosure finish (on the back) is meaningless except for perception of quality. Quite a few years ago I owned KLH12 and KLH5 speakers, and was astonished to see the midrange drivers (2) that they emplo...
Want more high frequency extension
Mattybumpkin...If amplification is the problem I really think the power amp is probably the place to look. EL34 and KT88 tubes are pentodes, and I bet that there is local feedback from the transformer to the output tubes. "Zero Feedback" probably ...

Dougdeacon...No. For artistry I like my Rubinstein LP, which I play in preference to digital discs, but I am always upset by the surface noise. Even when new this LP was somewhat noisy because they cut it at a rather low level, probably to preserv...
?'s about quality of audiophile recordings
I have not bought "audiophile" LPs, but in the case of digital discs, the ones that I have from certain European "audiophile" labels, and costing almost $30, are clearly superior to run-of-the-mill discs.
Know any DIY spkr kits w/woofer driven full-range?
You asked about any disadvantages. A woofer (or any driver for that matter) has very uneven frequency response, and poor off-axis response, as it approaches its high end frequency limit. It is best to silence the driver before it reaches this unev...
Speaker connection for Maggie 3.6R
My speaker wires have no terminations other than tinning of the strands, and are inserted into those "wretched little binding posts" which have set screws that firmly clamp the wires in place. I can't imagine how any slip-fit connector device coul...

It's hard to believe that the tubes would limit HF response...after all tubes are (or were) used for RF amplification. In a tube power amp the output transformer is the component that limits HF response, and a large amount of feedback around the t...

Jyprez...Recordings made prior to the digital age usually had a good deal of "processing", most notably Dolby or DBX. Also of interest is the almost universal use of multitrack recording with subsequent mixdown to stereo, which scrambles phasing, ...
