Is hdcd worth having ??
As I understand it, HDCD is a VERY clever way to provide a few additional bits of information from a 16 bit media. If we only had 16 bit media HDCD would be a winner. However, the world has moved on to 24 bit media, and that changes the picture.So...
What Ever Happened To The Krell SACD Standard?
DVDA when used for audio DOES NOT require a video display, although it's nice to have one. However any little elcheapo TV is OK. I got one (13 inch) for sixty some dollars. It's just another item in the audio rack.
Phenomenal Classical Recordings
Mozart is the most easily appreciated of classical composers, and a good place to start. If you jump into Mahler, or even some Beethoven, you might drown.I used to enjoy some radio programs where the music, often several renditions by different pe...
Is hdcd worth having ??
In my experience HDCD buys little or no improvement, particularly in view of the newer high res formats. However, I thought that the 2910 had other new features which you might want.
From biwire to single run: Now I hear a loud hiss.
Wire does not hiss. Tubes do. Switching tubes was a good start, but the preamp must have some other problem.
SACD vs DVD-A speaker set-up geometry
Ears...Favorable mention of the rear channel use on an Alison Krauss multichannel recording strikes me as strange. On the recording that I have, applause is loudly recorded only in the rear channels. This is a gimmick...not what you would hear fro...
fisher amp question.
Clevelandhifi...Unless the Columbia record predates the RIAA standard (1950??) you should use RIAA.
Slew Rate?
Overshoot on transients has, in times past, been deliberately introduced so as to compensate for the slow rise time of loudspeaker drivers. I don't know if anyone does this anymore. A good idea in theory, but probably difficult to execute without ...
fisher amp question.
"Col" by the way stands for Columbia, and there was usually an "RCA" setting also. One preamp that I had, a Heathkit, had separate controls with multiple settings for "rolloff" and "turnover" frequencies (if I remember the terms correctly). These ...

Sean...Believe me, sean, it can be done. Analog implementation of the necessary algorithms was not possible, but digital servos can be absolutely phenominal. You want "fluid damping"? No problem...just a few lines of code. Oh and what would you lik...
SACD vs DVD-A speaker set-up geometry
Ears...Antiphonal music has been around for centuries, but until now could not be recorded properly. Classical chamber music is sometimes performed "in the round" especially in small private performances. Many people have performed in orchestras, ...
Slew Rate?
The only way that an amplifier can deliver current is by applying voltage to the load. You cannot deliver amperes without volts, so it is not an either/or proposition. However, an amp with a "weak" power supply might be designed to deliver a high ...
Slew Rate?
Repeating something I have mentioned before, "settling time" tends to be the same as rise time, but really is not of interest in audio amps because musical sounds have leading edge transients, but die away gradually. This characteristic is used in...
Can OTL's drive ribbons well?
In a tube amp, it's the output transformer that limits frequency response. Tubes themselves function nicely at RF frequency, and so do transistors for that matter. With an ultralinear circuit (with transformer secondary taps for feedback around th...

Sean would have had my agreement up until the last 10 or 15 years, during which my work involved electromechanical systems including many digital servos. (It was a missile guidance system, and had about a dozen servos of one kind or another, but a...
