Reversing Polarity -- Voodoo or Easy Tweak?
Herman...You are a bit hasty in saying that the drum sound will be compression followed by rarefaction. It depends on which side of the drum the mic was on. Also, as a disturbance propagates the wave shape changes. Consider, for example a Tsunami,...
Reversing Polarity -- Voodoo or Easy Tweak?
Herman...Agreed that terminology is commonly sloppy. However, "OUT" of phase means a shift of 180 degrees, which is the same thing as a polarity reversal. Audiophiles like to worry a lot about the phase shift introduced by filters, as in a crossov...
Line Arrays - Competitive with best dynanics, ESL?
A multichannel format that I am very interested in is 2+2+2 (instead of 5.1). This uses High and Low (position) speakers for the Left and Right front, and is advocated by the MDG label. (Center and Subwoofer channels are used for the high speakers...
Reversing Polarity -- Voodoo or Easy Tweak?
Whoops! I should have said that reversing phase of one channel BEFORE MULTICHANNEL DECODING will swap front and rear. Doing speaker wires in a 2-channel setup will localize ambience, and make the soloist diffuse and directionless.
Reversing Polarity -- Voodoo or Easy Tweak?
Jeff_jones...Speaking of what I will call "relative" phase (one speaker with respect to the other) the "proper" phase is not always clear. Out of phase signal has a diffuse and directionless quality, and that might be what the recording engineer i...
"Component Video" cables
I just hooked up new inexpensive component video cables, with the proper 75 ohm characteristic. Even with the ordinary 27 inch Toshiba TV set, the picture was significantly improved.
Line Arrays - Competitive with best dynanics, ESL?
I am into Maggies, but, based on listening experience, the only dynamic system that I might buy would be a line array. "Line array" is a better description than "Planar" for Maggies, since the panel is much higher than wide. Because a line array h...
DK Design Group X-Dream - wow
Guidocorona...Excellent idea to use Pumice. Similar to my suggestion for the foamed metalic material, but a lot less expensive.
Why Energize the Whole Room/Virtual Reality Audio?
Robm321...Maybe my earphones (that I no longer use) were better than average, or perhaps my head is bigger than yours, but the soundstage I experienced when I closed my eyes was as real (and expansive) as it gets. Of course all this soundstage stu...
ELP laser turntable - any comments?
It occurs to me that a conventional phono pickup is basically a cam follower...a mechanical device to trace the shape of a template (the recorded groove). We think of it as a very small mechanical device but it is actually very large in context of...
Why Energize the Whole Room/Virtual Reality Audio?
The "sound in the middle of your head effect" happens with a mono signal. Not with stereo. All the comments about low distortion and wide frequency response with headphones are true. In some focused listening situations they are ideal, but most of ...
Dumb question: discrete circuitry/benefits?
Individual transistors wired up in a circuit, as opposed to entire circuits of multiple transistors in a single component, called an Integrated Circuit, (IC).
Going from Project Phono to DV P75 or Gram Slee
The extra gain of the phono stage will not make things "easier on the amp". The higher signal level will force you to lower the volume control, which, if you believe that pots are bad, is not helpful. Ideally you would lower the circuit gain so th...
Magnepan positioning
Six inches won't do the job, even if you put sound absorbing foam behind them. However, they are real easy to pull out a few feet when listening seriously. For background leave them next to the wall. The feet (of the Maggies) will keep them out ab...
Why is it so much more civil over here on Agon?
Just don't suggest that vinyl has surface noise.
