Nautilus 801's- Cheaper Amplification
You should definitely check out the Audio Van Alstine amps. Gobs of power with detail, and gorgeous bass. Will beat anything 2-3 times their price in pure sonic performance. If you listen with your ears, check out the new OmegaStar amps at: http:/...
Van the Man still has it
Van hasn't really made an album worth much since "Hymns To The Silence" - which I think is his best by far. "Too Long In Exile" has its moments, but his last 3 or 4 albums have been pretty disappointing. And I'm a big fan. My Van .02 Ed
Opinions welcomed
Wow. Sounds like someone trying hard to justify a Classe purchase.... Anyway, I also vote for the Pioneer. Besides, it has a turntable - just like your analog rig! And, if you get a PDR-05 or PDR-99, you can not only use it as a transport, you can...
Do you listen to your heart or your eye?
I'd better listen with my heart. My speakers are so ugly they'd be unwelcome in most any other room. Thank goodness my wife also listens with her heart. After mentioning a couple of times that for her sake I'd try to find something that sounded de...
Guitar Alphabet. Please fill out unused letters...
Here's a "B" - Lindsey Buckingham, of Fleetwood Mac. Truly great, mostly underappreciated, finger-picker extraordinaire. Here's a "K" - Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straits. Voted Guitar Player Of The Year when the Dire Straits debut LP came out. Anoth...
Cartridge for Rega Planar 3 / RB300
Don't overlook the Rega cartridges. They are extremely detailed & dynamic, with outstanding bass. Only caveat is that they can be a bit bright in some systems, but with your 802s they should work well. I'd recommend an Elys or Super Elys for a...
Noise from Rega P3/RB300/Dynavector DV20X-L
I think you are also running into an impedance mis-match there. The MM phono section probably wants a 47K Ohm load (which the 20 XH has), and the 20 XL is only 30 (NOT K!) ohms. Makes quite a difference in response & dynamics. Probably accentu...
Vinyl LPs To CD
I've had great luck using a Pioneer PDR-05. Makes very decent sounding CDs from LPs. It also uses the Stable Platter Mechanism, which is kinda like a turntable anyway. :-) It also makes a really nice transport. I bought it in really nice shape on ...
Know anybody who mods analog r2r tape machines?
You might try Jeff Galin at Electronics Service Labs in Wethersfield, CT. He might be up to the challenge. He specializes in Nakamichi stuff, but has worked wonders on some other gear for me from time to time. Call at: 860-529-3700. Or, check out ...
What does this mean?
It simply means that one end of the cable weighs the same as the other end. If you coil it up and heave it into the woods, it will spiral gracefully into the void. Which is probably what you should do with such a confused cable. :-) I'd try anothe...
Digital Switchbox Ideas?
Thanks. I had never even heard of an MSB Digital Director. It looks like that's exactly what I need. Maybe I should spend some time listening to the AV guys... :-) Stuck in a two channel world.... Ed
How many cd/dvd/sacd/cdr's players do you own?
Well, Let's see. I'm an anolog guy, so let's count 'em up. A CD-R deck into a DAC. A DAT deck. A Digital Compact Cassette deck. A DVD player. A CD burner for my Mac. Two other CD players in two other systems in the house. Yup, I'm an anolog guy fr...
Ugliest speaker ever?
Hi guys- I'm afraid I have to nominate my speakers as the ugliest ever. I own a set of Sequerra "Futuresonic" (which also may qualify as silliest name) loudspeakers. A picture is available, along with some very interesting reading, at "Stereos Of ...
Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits
Hi gang- Does anyone agree with me that "Baloney Again" from "Sailing To Philidelphia" is one of the more interesting Civil Rights songs they've heard? The lyrics just blow me away. As for the well-recorded J. J. Cale, it's really tough to find a ...
Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits
Hi- I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a few other Mark Knopfler albums. The Dire Straits album "On Every Street" is, IMHO, better than "Brothers In Arms." Also, the first Mark Knopfler solo LP, "Golden Heart" is very good. If you like live albums ...
