Tonearm with removable head-shell
Markpao is correct; proper alignment is essential. Still, you have alternatives. New, you have to go Graham. Beau coup bux and unless you are seriously into vinyl, not worth the investment. You might want to look for Bang & Olufsen pivot arm t...
One artist, band, you keep coming back to
Tie - Frank Zappa & Steely Dan / Don Fagen. A lot of FZs later pressings were actually on virgin vinyl as standard (not sure if it was JVC Super Vinyl, but it is translucent). Always entertaining, humorous and educational, regardless.Steely Da...
Phono Hum w/ Pro-Ject Debut III
What you are describing sounds like a ground fault in either the tonearm or the table. Start the process of elimination. Disconnect the cartridge and see if the hum is still there. If so, touch the table spindle and then the tonearm to see if thin...
Rogers Studio 1 Monitor
The mid is a Celestion, the tweeter a KEF and the woofer is a Rogers. Black walnut cabinets with centered, round tapered lip forward vents. That makes them later production and cures the "bloom" of the earlier square vented models. They have a pha...
Speaker cables: $3000 or $380. What do you get??
Here is what a noted engineer and speaker designer has to say on the subject: http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm. It's your money and you will have to decide for yourself.
Need advice on a turntable question
The 2M Red is a really good-sounding cartridge for a MM and will outperform most others out there. The Pro-Ject table should be able to extract everything it has to offer. The comment about your old ML1 is a bit biased as it was also a nice piece,...
Does Mc Intosh make reference gear
"Well below reference." What a disingenuous comment. Reference is whatever a given manufacturer is willing to pay for or someone's ego insists it is. Everyone's hearing is unique to that individual and what one likes another may dislike. Note that...
Why do some audiophiles beat up McIntosh?
Was in the biz back in the day, sold SME, Ariston, Dynavector, Accustat, H-K, Hafler, Crown, Rogers & more. Had a ton of it all in my home, and auditioned Threshold, Krell, Levinson, Logan, Snell, Magnepan, Grace, AKG, Empire, Conrad Johnson, ...
setting VTF with a digital guage
You definitely want to set the tracking force at the playing surface. Tonearm balance geometry generally alters tracking force if it set at a horizontal plane different from that of the record.
Better sounding after 1 hour
It's common in all higher end gear, and some can take quite a bit longer. Had a McIntosh C2300 tube preamp that took over 3 hours to really sound right. Some folks will leave their stuff on 24/7. Transistors are usually a bit faster to warm up, bu...
MC recommendation-Monbrison/VPI Scout II
I love my Dynavector XX2 MKII. No coloration at all, tight bass, spacious image, great frequency response. You don't say what speakers you have, so it may not be right for you. Matching input and output transducers is tricky. Good luck!
Basic Question: XLR Cables
You need a pair - one for left channel and another for the right.
B & W Matrix 801 S3 and tube amplifier
Totally agree w/ Rrog & Marakenetz. The 801 S3 is one of the finest speaker systems ever made. However, they are inefficient and were designed for professional-level amplification. Auditioned them back in the day with Threshold Stasis electron...
Need a Magnepan UniTrac I tonearm repaired
Thanks for your responses and sorry it took so long to reply. everyone! Mosin, I travel a bunch, but if you can let me know when & how to get in touch, I'll be happy to chat. This whole thing has me in a bit of a quandry.I'd never heard of App...
Review: Dynavector KARAT 23 R Cartridge
I couldn't agree more! I have used the 23Rs since ever and my most recent one (MR23RS) is still mounted in the Magnepan Unitrac I (a fabulous arm) on my Sota Sapphire. It is an open, crisp and superbly musical combination that has trounced every o...
