What to do with a Sony PS X-800? Sold these back in the day, and it was a very nice table. Very solid Japanese direct drive sound. Not as pretty as the B&O, but more thoroughly engineered. Repairing the unit is a tough call unless you are really married to how it sounds in yo...
Tube rolling 12AX7As Newbee and Lowrider are correct. The C2300 is a wonderful unit out of the box and you'll want to know how it matches with everything else in your system before fooling around with changing its sound. Took me about 6 months with mine until I had a ...
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE Rogers Studio 1, purchased new in 1983. 30 years on, and I still love the way they sound. Every upgrade in my gear has allowed them to reveal more and become more musical. I may move on one day, but that day isn't today.
Cleaning new/sealed records? Always clean records before playing. Always. And for all the reasons everyone else has noted. You wouldn't want to look at the world through smudged glass, so why would you listen to to debris on a surface?I've used LAST Power Cleaner (mold releas...
Tonearm/Cartridge Matching Totally agree with Mofimadness and for all the same reasons. So long as the cartridge tare weight is within the arm's range, set-up (alignment, azimuth, VTA, VTF, capacitance (MM), impedance (MC)) and general compatibility with your speakers is th...
Why do McIntosh come with cheap plastic remotes? Have to disagree that the remotes are somehow substandard. Both of my new Mc units (C50 & MVP881BR) came with back-lit remotes that work very well. The soft-touch coating on the plastic has a nice feel and doesn't collect dust like the NOS rep...
Test LP's Worth it? I also use the Hi-Fi News LP, and it helps you figure out what it says it does. I found it especially useful for fine-tuning azimuth and anti-skate. Like Moonglum says, it's still no substitute for music or a good protractor.
Graham phantom MK2 /. Simon Yorke S10 On the mount, it depends on the table you have. The Graham mount is physically smaller, which allows the arm to be mounted on a wider variety of tables. I also found it very easy to install and set up.Arm length also depends on the table, but is a...
VTA and SRA? So, SRA can only be indirectly altered by means of adjusting VTA and / or VTF. Could be why I never bothered to look any further than VTA. BTW, VTA adjustment on the fly is the main reason I went with the Graham. Learned this a long, long time ago...
VTA and SRA? I stand corrected. So, presuming I now understand this, SRA is a fixed relationship within the stylus itself and cannot be adjusted.
Synchronicity Donald Fagen's "The NIghtfly" MFSL was what finally helped me figure out cartridge and tonearm set-up to get true high fidelity. Still use it as my primary reference.
VTA and SRA? They are the same thing. VTA = vertical tracking angle; SRA = stylus rake angle. Both are measures of the angle of the stylus to the groove along the axis of the cantilever. The measure of the angle of the stylus to the groove perpendicular to the...

Best Rock Album in 2013 Just listened to Nine Inch Nails "Hesitation Marks" on vinyl. I thought it was quite impressive. Fidelity was superior, didn't hear much compression and the tunes were all entertaining.
Maxell or TDK? The real trick was biasing the deck for a specific tape type. Different tapes required somewhat different biases. These had to be set using an oscilloscope for almost all decks. I liked TDK SA better than Maxell UDXL II; it sounded more lively. Bu... |
