Class A Power Amp Degredation
If you do plan on buying a used amp that is around 15 years old, I'd replace the capacitors. Other than that, most SS amps (like the Levinsons, Krells, Pass Labs, etc.) are built conservatively such that they should last decades without fault.
Rowland Capri vs. the ynergy IIi
If you do use shorting plugs, make sure they actually "short" the audio signal (i.e., wire the signal to ground). I believe the Cardas product only covers the outside of the RCA inputs rather than shorting them.As JR suggested, you can use a cheap...
Audio Research LS series......
I wouldn't consider an LS2B one of the "tube" ARC preamps (though it has one). It sounds (sounded) to me more like a hybrid or SS preamp. If you have to stick with ARC, I'd go for the LS25.
Most resolving solid state amp you've ever heard?
Threshold SA series amplifiers and Pass Labs XA series amplifiers - both operate fully in Class A to their rated output and are, of course, designs by Nelson Pass.
Mcintosh c46 balanced input vs. fully balanced pre
Merely having balanced inputs/outputs is indeed different from having a balanced circuit design (input and output).Just because a component has balanced inputs/outputs does not necessarily mean that its circuit has been designed that way.If proper...
Pass Labs X5
I believe the X series amps, which are class A/AB, are biased in full class A to 20% and then switch to class AB. For the X5, that means 25W into 8 ohms Class A and thereafter up to 125W into 8 ohms Class AB.I believe Nelson Pass used this same pe...
Specific needs for a new preamp...
Anyone have an opinion on the Simaudio Moon P5.3? It appears that it has a 50ohm RCA and 100ohm XLR output impedance.
Specific needs for a new preamp...
Thanks. Hmmm. I remember the Coherence well - back in the day.Haven't looked at Rowland stuff in a while. Seems like I need to do some looking around. =)
No More upgrades to ARC LS25 Mk.1?
Thanks all.Yeah, the LS26 would be ideal for the 6H30.Might as well stick with the Mk.1 and try some better tubes. And particular recommendations?
No More upgrades to ARC LS25 Mk.1?
Yes. I understand about the nuances between the Mk.1 and Mk.2. I just wish I had a Mk.2 to use in my current system. If I were to tell you the Mk.1 is hooked up to a Threshold SA/4e and B&W 802's, would that change anyone's recommendations?Gues...
No More upgrades to ARC LS25 Mk.1?
JMC:My bad regarding front and rear panels. That's not it.Of course I want to improve the performance of the LS25. But, I think the jury is out as to whether the Mk.1 with new 6922's from upscale audio is better or the Mk.2 with the JFET/6H30 is b...
No More upgrades to ARC LS25 Mk.1?
Yup. I'll contact GNSC. While they may to certain upgrades, I doubt they would do the Mk.1 to Mk.2 upgrades given the parts involved (e.g., new front and rear panels).
No More upgrades to ARC LS25 Mk.1?
I did speak to someone at ARC and that's what I was told. I assume they will still service both Mk.1 and Mk.2 LS25's but apparently not upgrade. Guess they want to sell more of the LS26's.
Passive Preamps w/ Transformer Volume Control
Ozzy62:The thresholds are definitely up to the task, as I've only used them directly connected to one input source without any preamp. However, as I said before, I've been restricted to using CD players all of these years with a variable out.
Passive Preamps w/ Transformer Volume Control
As between a resistor-based passive preamp and a TVC, are there any benefits of the former over the latter. From what I've heard and read, the answer is no. Any thoughts?
