Badly recorded albums needing upgrading
Layla AOLS...never thought it was so bad relative to its time, but you want a great band that was really ill-treated by their label, try Jefferson Airplane.  The first release that sounded good was the "Worst of" compilation, where the remasters h...
Stereo Receivers from the past...
I’ve never owned a receiver, having been advised early on that separates were the way to go, but my 45+ years in the HiFi business has given me a lot of perspective. Some favorites: the Pioneers of 1974-5 (SX-737, 838, SX-750 and up), Sansui 7 and...
Are Bowers and Wilkins speakers overpriced?
To the Bolsheviks on this forum, consider the mouths that are fed on the retail dollar. Markups at every level support the workers in the field of Hi-Fi!  The design engineers at their CAD workstations, the woodworkers, the machinists, the Packagi...
Best speaker between 15K-35K
As appealing as it is to weigh in on this convo, I gotta agree with all those who mention the room environment and the listener’s expectations as a key to finding the right speaker.  Do you want or require high volume “live concert” SPLs?  Are we ...
What is this speaker cable connection?
Clip ‘m ‘n strip ‘m!  Then put on some simple decent bananas. get ones with at least 2 screws. Buy Parts Express # 091-3600 or 091-3610. Both good. BFAs are better than regular bananas. Got to be careful not to exert a shear force though, they can...
You just won a $5,000 audio gear only gift card
Ohm Walsh Tall 3000s for $4K and a Liberty DAC.
New Cartridge
I agree that the Exact is nothing special on a Planar 3 or 6. The Moonstone is a bonded elliptical so despite MF’s praise it fails on Chakster’s criteria. The Sumiko Amethyst is the one to look at, or why not the Ortofon Bronze for less. Both woul...
Does any one have a link to Playboys stereo systems of the rich and famous?
I’m surprised no mention of McIntosh...you’d think it was all over the Playboy demographic. My first job in Hi-Fi the store owner (Mac dealer) was absolutely “the kind of man who reads Playboy”...a status obsessed, philandering, misogynistic count...
Are your speakers designed for your listening taste and hearing ability?
I built my own speakers from Dayton Audio RS 7” woofers and Morel’s Tweemid integrated soft domes on a single plate. I put L-pads in series with both domes so I could tune the balance to sound most like live concert recordings from Symphony Hall o...
Which one? Paradigm persona 3f, Revel Studio2, Audiosolution Figaro L, Goldenear reference
Can’t ya find a pair of Focal Kanta2 or 3 to audition?  They are very similar to the excellent Sopras. They have it all.  Revel C228Be sounds a bit flat (dimensionless) in comparison to my ears.
Cartridge misadventures
I loved this little tale.  I work in such a shop and I am the guy with the soldering iron and the supply of clips. We live to serve!
Horn From The Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story
I got religion when I heard The eponymous PBBB and read Pete Welding’s notes, then checking out Little Walter, James Cotton, Junior Wells, etc.  Went to Gerde’s Folk City and bought my first of many harps. While there I found What’s Shakin’ and th...
There's a lot more bass in a 6.5" driver than most of you think
I work in a high end store, but do not care to pay the cost for anything we sell, even at half retail.  So I built speakers using components from Parts Express, including their pre-fab crossovers.  I used the 4 ohm Reference Series 7" aluminum con...
Do you prefer tidy room to messy one with better sound?
I remember an audio pal from the 70's with a poster on his wall stating..."BEWARE OF GOOD LOOKING STEREOS"...His room was a mess of course, with stacked up amplifiers, equalizers, various speaker systems of the day, etc.
Small room amp and speakers recommendation
If you're handy, ditto on the Solstice from Parts-Express...Morel drivers and very well designed.  Continueing on that theme, you can also build an Akitika PR-102 and GT-102.  This will run you just over $2K, leaving room for some very decent cabl...
