Channel Island DAC
I've had a CI Audio VDA-1 (with PS) in my system for over 3 months now and have absolutely no regrets. As I've said before, IMO, the only problems that it has in gaining acclaim are 1) its reasonable price raises questions about the high price of ...
Digital Front End.. help please
Be careful about used units more than a year or two old. Its pretty widely accepted that DAC chips have improved substantially in just the past couple years, so many lower cost new DACs approach the performance of high-end brand DACs using earlier...
Channel Islands VDA-1 anyone?
I bought one a few weeks ago and recommend it very highly. Absolutely a giant killer. Here's the URL for a review I wrote over on the Asylum:http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/digital/messages/46921.html
Why buy older digital gear?
I still find my circa 1985 dbx DX3 cdp to be better than the bulk of current big-name players. Looking at the boards in my dbx, its easy to note that it relies on built-up circuits with quality components and parts. These have been largely replace...
DVD player as the best transport to use with DAC?
Related - Some DVD players have one laser head for DVD and one for CD. Can anyone say if or why this is desirable? I'm seriously considering a going to a DVD megachanger and DAC.
C I Audio VDA-1 DAC
Someone recently posted a review of the CI DAC on Audio Asylum.
DIGITAL UPGRADE DILEMMA
Be sure to get a return privilege for any amp or cdp you buy. Your Parasound amp is no slouch and not going to easy to improve upon. Any "high end" amp you might find within your budget will most likely be of substantially lower power than the 120...
Vandersteen 2ce upgrade?
I'm a 3A owner. Provided you still prefer Vandy sound, I agree that a pair of used 3A's should be available in your budget (maybe tough to find 3A sigs at that price) and they would greatly enhance your sound over 2ce's. The low end response is ph...
I can't believe there is no difference
Keep the Yamaha as preamp?? If you're not in a hurry to spend $$, check your Yammie to see if it will function as a preamp. If so, you can shop for a satisfactory power amp and won't lose FM tuner function (provided you use it). I did that with my...
I can't believe there is no difference
Your test will exclude the Yamaha internal DAC, which for now, seems to be the heart of the issue. If you have a full refund warranty on the Cambridge, I think it would be best to break it in for as long as you can, then compare it to the Yamaha/D...
I can't believe there is no difference
You're correct in assuming that the TOSlink from your DVD player is a direct digital signal to the internal DAC in the Yamaha reciever. It's also not surprising that you don't hear much difference between the Yamaha DAC and the Cambridge CDP.Have ...
deemphasis
Didn't a guy named Dolby patent that about 40 years ago?
Audiophile Changer: Cool or Hopeless Compromise?
There are now several units (HP, Encient) available that will store a number of cds on hard drives in compressionless formats (i.e., not mp3), link to your audio system and operate via wireless keyboard. They're pricey ($1000+) and won't store a s...
How many concerts do you attend a year
Its getting harder to find music we're willing to pay $100 or more to hear. Seems that the musical directors in So Cal vibrate between Mozart and Mahler, ignoring most of what was written in between, except of course for Beethoven's overexposed wa...
Mozart on marimbas???
I don't know what the piece was; they only played about 30 seconds. It was an ensemble, not solo, and quite polished. It sounded more like Mozart or maybe Haydn than Bach; a bit too relaxed for JSB.
