Linear tracking turntables, whatever happened?
The Universal looks like a fairly conventional pivoted arm. What mechanism does it have that makes it tangential?@cleeds My bad. I mistyped and meant pivoted.
Cartridge Mounting Hardware
@vasaudio Thanks but not this time. I don't know how I would even audition such a change, but I also want to leave the warranty intact. I will probably upgrade my cartridge this year.
Cartridge Mounting Hardware
Thanks for the tips about over-tightening. I don't think that's ever been a problem for me in the 4+ decades I've been playing records. However, that analogmagik torque-wrench is intriguing. Given that my TT/arm/cartridge are close to $15k it may ...
Vinyl Sleeves and Jackets
All my new and S/H records get a new inner sleeve after initial cleaning (Mofi or QRP..they are the same), and for single and gatefold jackets a 5mil outer sleeve.
Linear tracking turntables, whatever happened?
Clearaudio has several linear arms starting at the ~$4K range. I had thought about getting the TT-5 for my Ovation (to replace the Magnify arm) but opted for their top of the line tangential arm instead, the Universal. The TT-5 and their other lin...
Why don't all phono preamps include a rumble filter?
@louisl Other than getting my turntable properly isolated: I use a Solidsteel WS-5 wall bracket with 3" end-grain maple block. The turntable (Clearaudio Ovation) sits on that. I have changed the OEM feet to a set of Harmonic Resolution Systems (HR...
Why don't all phono preamps include a rumble filter?
@louisl I guess it depends on the system, but when I engaged my KAB RF-1 – whether in a tape loop or inline between phono and pre – I experienced a loss of SQ. That is why I made the effort to fix the root cause of the problem, rather than patch i...
Why don't all phono preamps include a rumble filter?
@stereo5 In the end, my primary problem – after I got isolation under control otherwise – was the tonearm. I was using a Clearaudio Magnify. The magnetic bearing caused severe woofer pumping on certain recordings. After doing everything else I cou...
Why don't all phono preamps include a rumble filter?
My personal experience is that a rumble filter is a band-aide (and a poor one at that) for not correcting isolation/vibration issues. I learned that the hard way and now have a KAB RF-1 Rumble Filter sitting unused (and unneeded) in my closet.
Does anyone use white gloves to handle records?
If you need to wear gloves for handling records, maybe you need to learn how to handle records.
clearaudio turntables
@mulveling I've had my Ovation for 6 years, and started off with a Clarify arm and Talisman V2 cartridge. Now I have the Magnify with a Concerto V2. After I get my Universal arm I will start setting money aside for a new cartridge. Since Clearaudi...
clearaudio turntables
I don’t look at my Ovation. I listen to it, and it was worth every penny. No matter how much I upgrade the rest of the system, the Ovation just demonstrates over and over how it delivered at higher levels of performance all along. Now I have a Uni...
Using Maple Butcher Block Under a Turntable
As for hardness, I have the Butcher Block Acoustics end-grain 3" Maple block, and they rate it 1450 on the Janka scale. I am using it under a ~40 lb Clearaudio Ovation (with 2350 gr of clamp and outer limit ring).
Using Maple Butcher Block Under a Turntable
I got my butcher block from Butcher Block Acoustics the other day. It took about 6 weeks because I had mine done at a custom size to fit my Solidsteel WS-5 wall shelf. It came with cork/rubber pads for feet, which I am using to support the block o...
Herron VTPH-2A Phono Preamp....anyone familiar?
I listen to jazz and classical, but also a bit of rock from time to time. There is absolutely no lack of of anything on the VTPH-2 (or 2a) for any kind of music. It has plenty of PRaT, musicality, bite and is the best presentation of all kinds of ...
