CD Player vs. music streaming
for Classical music I would stay with CD. The streaming services are very bad at organising classical metadata and it is difficult to find the piece you want to listen to by the orchestra or artist or conductor.  Maybe this is will change one day ...
Want a streaming device without DAC in $1K range
I would also recommend the Pro Ject Streambox S2 Ultra.  It is based on a Raspberry pi but has an audiophile power supply and upgraded audiophile components. It is designed by John Westlake of Audiolab MDac fame. And it is very small.  If you go f...
Is it a good idea to buy CD players over 10 years old even it is a reliable brand?
From costly experience I would advise only buying a second-hand CD player if the full transport mechanism is still available. Furthermore, if you like the sound of the player you buy, I would budget for purchasing a spare transport as soon as poss...
Recommendation for an audiophile speaker cord that is not "bright"?
Not helpful perhaps but Wilsons can sound bright if your ears are sensitive to those frequencies (mine are and I can’t tolerate Wilsons). I do not think speaker cable can overcome this.
to fb or not to fb... that is the ?
@andera   I have joined.  To get more traction on the group I feel you need more discussions. The more people interact with a group the more that group's posts appear in member's newsfeeds and alerts. Take a look at 'the audio cognoscenti group' a...
CD sound quality: original pressings vs regular remaster vs MFSL, etc
In terms of which version of a CD to buy, a general (but not always applicable) rule for playing through good HiFi equipment is that an original CD from the 1980s or early 1990s is preferable to any remaster. The exception is classical music and s...
Center placed equipment stands
I have a 9 foot high chimney breast between my speakers. And one speaker is closer to it than the other. Real world room problems.
The science of opinion ...
@swanlee597You pretty much cannot go on an audio forum these days without a vocal group yelling "snake oil" "ABX before you can share your opinions" about EVERY single thing in audio. It’s gotten to the point I think these people get offended if pe...
Network Switches
@mitch2 To make sure I am clear, should I run a single short Ethernet cable from my router to the switch and then connect the various TV devices, plus my Antipodes DX server, to the switch....is it that simple?Yes correct. It doesn’t matter if the...
Network Switches
I would like to know why I would need a switch as discussed here, where I would use it, and what it would do for me.@mitch2 Buy a cheap second hand Cisco 8 port switch from eBay and connect it via Ethernet to your router. Connect your streamer etc...
Why discussions generate into personal affronts...
Threads that decay into back and forth bantering with in-jokes or jokes which most people don’t get are also tiresome.  Eg this one Ginger, Mary-Ann...?
Remasters - are they better? What exactly is it?
There are various reasons we (I work in the music industry, and have in the past been involved with remastering) remaster old recordings. There are also various reasons why some sound better than the original to some people, and some worse to some...
Unintended Consequences? Digital Streaming
The main problem with streaming services is that they will only have the latest version of the album released by the record label.  This means the most recent remaster.  Remastering almost always ends up with a more compressed, less dynamic, maste...
Why does my old CD player sound so much better than my new streamer?
It is the different DACs which is contributing most of  the difference in sound you hear.  I have a high end CD player with a digital USB input to allow a network bridge (streamer with no DAC) to run through the same DAC.   Initially CD sounded be...
A brief review of 15 high-end speakers on home demo including B&W, Boenicke, Magico,Wilson
@audiokinesis / Duke - good post. Thanks.
