Pass Labs X2.5 - vs. - Placette Active Preamps
I am surprised anyone had problems with dynamics using the active Placette. Stehno, Guy told me he can build in some gain if you need it.
After Quad ESL's?
That volume thing is important. I listen a lot at low volume and Quads may be the all-time champ for that application. The Harbeths don't seem to be so good until you turn it up a bit, alas (but not too much).
Harbeth owners/ speakers rock ?
I want to reserve judgement for a while. I've only had them for 10 days.
After Quad ESL's?
I had the 57's for about 15 years and have been through a succession of speakers since then. I am now breaking in a pair of the Harbeth Super HL5. I have been impressed that, In the all-important midrange, these appear to be closer to the sound of...
Harbeth owners/ speakers rock ?
I am breaking in a pair of the Super HL5's. My early sense is that they are quite versatile and are fine for rock. If I listened primarily to rock, I might not choose them, but then I would not have chosen the Quads, Avalons, Spendors, ProAcs, The...
What does listening to a speaker really tell us?
I agree that you often can't hear those details in live performance. But if you could, you'd pee your pants and declare the venue the greatest in the known universe. So why not have the detail at home if you can.

Difference between First Sound Presence and Hotrod
I agree.
What does listening to a speaker really tell us?
My yardstick for evaluating any component really boils down to how much I "get off" on the music over an extended period of time. What else matters?
"Bedini Ultra Clarifier", does it really work??
You play both disks through the same system, so how could you have volume differences?
Dedicated cdps that excel in vertical soundstaging
So excel = added height? Not for me.
Could somebody please explain
Maybe it sounds different from genres they can easily identify, and seems to incorporate more than one of them, so they hang the "eclectic" label on it.Maybe it's music they genuinely like.Maybe you're an awful snob.
tube upgrade for first sound
Discharge button? Is that new?
Proac 2.5's-something not quite right- ideas?
Ben, I had 2.5's for a couple of years. There was much to love about them, but I always craved greater clarity and resolution, and always found the bass, while powerful, was too one-note.
