$16K new/used speaker question?
If you find the Vapor Audio Nimbus (white or black version) to your interest, feel free to contact me. I reviewed it and know where there is a pair - my previous set.
Second audio system in your house?
Another option is headphones, and it's a good alternative. Some very impressive cans nowadays.
Quad 57s with after market power cords
Amen on the sans grills! One of the worst moves in listening, imo, is to shove a screen ahead of a driver. :(
Quad 57s with after market power cords
Changing power cords is very efficacious for my Kingsound King III ESL speakers (reviewed for Dagogo.com), and in fact I tune the system partly by using different power cords with the ESL speakers' power supplies. I had several people insist it wo...
Best Of Breed or Matching Components?
Flip a coin
Replacing caps in DAC
I suggest you don't do anything with it; a twenty year old DAC will be trounced by any number of new models. I suggest you put it out to pasture in a less refined rig. I would not dream of using a twenty year old DAC, not with the fabulous advance...
Changed amps - center image moved
Why is there so much concern about a center image changing with an amp change as though something has to be wrong with the rig? What jeffga has described is typical; every component has its own set of sonic characteristics. The description of more...
Tice vs. Tice
Neither; if you need the power protection that's one thing. However, if you are going for the cleanest, more superior sonic experience then avoid it. I use a Tice Powerblock - in my AV rig, not my two channel system. You're dead on, bluewolf.
Concert Experience for $5k?
I suggest you seek a speaker with 8 Ohms impedance and at least 92-93dB sensitivity, and preferably higher. Speakers with such characteristics have a lot of liveliness to them. They are not the "end all, be all," but they would be able to deliver ...
Second audio system in your house?
A thought which might keep the peace in the household; get a cheap music making machine, i.e. countertop radio of sorts for the other room if the wife likes music, and circulate in other gear into your main rig. The "second" system will sound bett...
Second audio system in your house?
So, you're  not sure it's a the sensible thing to do, but, "I won't even ask the wife what her opinion is, as I already know it." I take it that means you doubt she would be in favor of it. Uh, oh.  See the thread on Audio - Post Divorce...  ;)
Is it all worth it?
My salvation came in the form of variety. When a person is endlessly pursuing "the One," it's a good clue that they won't find it. Very likely there is an insatiable drive to hear something different, no matter how good the rig. Buying and dumping...
Bower and Wilkins and its relationship with Classe and Rotel
No, I do not think so. The odds are 50/50  that any other particular component/set of components will sound superior in comparison, given that you are not working against your purposes in selecting an amp which is appropriate to the application. T...
Is it all worth it?
Mapman, well, let's have your list. When you say, "...compete with new stuff citing many times more somewhat surprisingly," let's hear the names and models of speakers these nearly free speakers compete well against. To what have you compared them...
Is it all worth it?
Mid-Fi is about the best you can say regarding Boston speakers.  Look at the construction and specs of the A40, truly awful. This is not a high quality speaker, and it cannot produce upper end sound relative to others. Yeah, you save a lot of mone...
