Solid State Preamp to replace tube unit I agree with those who point out that, generally speaking, preamp tubes will last for years, and that the CJ preamp you own is an anomaly or just cranky product design. There are a lot of fine tube preamps out there. I’m particularly fond of the 6...
Qobuz and Tidal comparison I prefer Qobuz, sonically. I can hear little if any difference between their streams and my stored tracks of the same music. Like others here, I find their presentation crisper and more lively than Tidal.
Where to purchase cables? Blue Jeans interconnects are pretty darn good. They’re not the ultimate in resolution or focus, but they are smooth and natural and throw a nice soundstage. The sound, to use a vague, subjective term, "normal." And you can easily order custom leng...
Why tube rectification? Nothing wrong with that choice, IMO. Generally tube rectifier failures occur in power amplifiers with high current draws. The Dynaco ST70 is notorious for eating Chinese 5AR4s. In a preamp there usually isn't enough current being drawn to worry...
Why tube rectification? I would just add that, in the case of well-designed tube equipment that enjoys a reputation for excellent sound, trust the designer. ;-) Someone like Steve Deckert certainly makes a choice that works best for him and his customers.
Is it possible to have too much/too many filters/tweaks? I agree with many of the comments that, yes, there can be too many tweaks. I have a very dear friend who is constantly buying inexpensive "tweaks" that are supposed do a variety of things, from "blackening the background" to "widening the soundst...
Newbie, first time tube rolling. @quincy I would beg to differ, in that by my observation, manufacturers of tube equipment these days choose tubes that are inexpensive and readily available, and most often these are Chinese tubes. This keeps the price lower and assures that, c...
Why tube rectification? I use tube rectifiers in my builds, partly to conform with the vintage circuits I’m trying to replicate, and partly because I prefer the sound. Even with ultra-fast diodes I can still hear a slight coarseness and reduction of fluidity and "air." O...
Holographic DAC With Air And Decay I love my Doge 7 DAC. It's extremely analog-like and 3D. It projects a really grand soundstage, with tons of instrumental weight, air and color. Actively musical. You need to spend a fair amount on good tubes for the output. Much better than ...
What exactly is PRaT??? @richardbrand LOL! I never thought it could be hazardous... ;-)
What exactly is PRaT??? @richardbrand Classical music most certainly benefits from a system with PRaT. In that case, I call it the "air-conducting factor." ;-) Just the other day I listened to a marvelous stereo broadcast of Pierre Monteux and the Boston Symphony per...
What exactly is PRaT??? @soix "Really? Seriously??? Why are you even here if you don’t get these simple concepts?" You already asked me that and I answered you.
What exactly is PRaT??? @bolong There’s a long-standing discussion in the classical world concerning famous conductors who "slowed down" as they aged, some rather drastically, and whether this was related to cardiovascular health. Otto Klemperer was a notable example. ...
What exactly is PRaT??? Oh, I think we're probably more on the same page than not. I didn't say I don't *understand* 3D imaging or soundstage. I asked for definitions. Those definitions would have to include the word "illusion," which is what they are, illusions. But...
What exactly is PRaT??? @audition__audio And subjectivity is just stupid when it comes to music, right? |
