Amp vs Preamp
Personal experience tells me there are so many factors that addressing the weakest link makes the most difference. Narrowed to preamp/amp again the weakest of the two being replaced gives the most benefit. The following can be a litmus test as to ...
Looking at a Mcintosh 275vi with upgraded gold lion tubes
Get some KR KT88s. Huge upgrade. Verdant Audio.  $$$ No affiliation. I have Northern Electric, Gold lions, NOS Tungsol 6550 $$$$. I believe the original 275s which I owned in the 70s were voiced with the Tungsols.
New expensive power cord for amp and no change in sound?
I've read this thread and each poster has his/her reasons for buying in or not on the power cables. JMO but had an experience that confirmed for me, in my system, that they do matter.  Purchased some speakers, Evolution MM3s. Decided to get the E...
How often, and how, do you clean your stylus?
There is a setup consultant, Stirling Trayle @ Audio Systems Optimized. Pretty thorough as to TTs and cleaning stylus. He attacks the whole system as to static electricity, clean contacts etc. His website has some great info including stylus clean...
Solid state amp vs tube amps
For the first time a solid state amp sits between the speakers burning in. Thinking it might add tighter bass with better damping factor. So far there are definite advantages albeit with some drawbacks. It's going to take a while as it doesn’t hav...
Those rare albums that are great on first listen.
So many great albums listed. Alabama 3 - Exile on Cold Harbor Lane
evolution acoustics mm2 - review after 600 hours
As do I.
Allnic H 7000 XLR out.
Albert Porter said that the Allnic is transformer balanced when switched so got some new cables and ran it to a BAT Rex 2 preamp with XLRs. Now balanced throughout and loving it. Deep, immersive and vivid.
Am I right for this forum?
Making music sound more real and involving should not be seen as a character defect. I can lead to an addictive chase without end, or at least ending with the ole empty pockets. My experience has often been an increasing respect for the artist's e...
Should Amps be plugged into a power conditioner?
Ralph, would appreciate your opinion on my situation. My system's power is supplied by an EQUI=TECH 5Kva wall unit running six dedicated lines, two to the front end, four to the amps (Audiopax M100 monoblocks)  and REL Subs. Am able to dedicate ea...
Handling Heavy Amps
A good hand truck and aluminum ramps go a long way. I have double doors in the basement so getting things down there, not too bad. My experience is (some will differ here), weight in the equipment=weight in the music. Had piano movers for my speak...
Terry DeWick has passed
Terry was a consummate tech but above all else quietly dedicated towards providing both quality and consideration to his clients. I'm sure many here have had great experiences in their dealings with him but would like to tell the forum about one. ...
Moving into an apartment with wood joist floors - worried about neighbors hearing
We all make mistakes.
Anybody using the last record preservative
I'm a fan. Have "Catch a Fire" by the Wailers with the old Zippo lighter cover. Treated 30 or so years ago. I've had the album 50 years. Sounds spectacular.
A persistent hummmm...
Have a new Hi Fi Rose streamer, hooked up last night. Sounds pretty good but for the first time-hum. Can't handle hum so here I go as well.
