Best small, desktop speakers, $500 or under (new or used)
I also recommend Audioengine 2+ speakers for true desktop use. Really nice performance for an inexpensive price. Heck, I even got out of my "speakers should be heard and not seen" mode and bought the red ones (really attractive!)
Looking into speaker upgrade/change?
I agree with @adg101; I own the Aerial Model 7s (the original series) and it requires at the very *minimum* 100W/channel. I heard competent drive from BAT tube amps (60W), however it was in a fairly small room.I suggest either getting a more power...

Best songs to test speakers
I find it best to listen to a variety of music that is well recorded, well listened favorites. I burned a CD that I used (and continue to use) for auditions. Some show soundstaging, others impact, etc.I left out classical even though I own a numbe...

R.I.P: Rest In Peace Roy Johnson, Green Mountain Audio's Genius
Sorry to hear of this sad news! I knew he had been ill for some time but didn't know it was this serious.I'll never forget how he attempted to help me address the (then) severe room problems I had for 45 minutes despite the slim chances of making ...

How come Horn + woofer designs are not more popular?
Not a horn guy, but I have heard some horn systems I liked (or was surprised at the quality). Never heard any of the newer fancy designs, however. I guess I'm part of the folks that consider them "shouty".Some people like the immediacy that is pre...
Music lover or audiophile?
Is this a Kill Bill Volume 2 question?Budd:So, which "R" you filled with?Elle Driver:What?Budd:They say the number one killer of old people is retirement. People got a job to do, they tend to live a little bit longer so they can do it. I've always...
The Cartridge and Stylus makes a big difference.
Wow! I have had a Benz Micro Gold and Wood SL on my VPI Scout 2 and both carts have been tiptop in regard to performance...It's been a great tracker and I also have never heard a performance by Benz classified as "cold."This leads me to assume it'...
Aerial 7B amp recommendations
The Aerial/McCormack combos was one of my favorite pairings in regard to sound.Unless your room is huge or absorbs sound or you listen at insane levels (or a combination of the above) you should have no problem.I’m currently using an Aragon 4004 m...
Speed kills....
Never heard them, but you may want to try:http://www.eminent-tech.com/LFT8.htmlAlso, you may want to try other "planar" type such as Martin-Logan, Magneplanar, etc. This may be your cup of tea.Of course, YMMV.Good Luck!
A song murdered by someone.
I hate to say this, but what about "Dancing in the Street" by David Bowie and Mick Jagger (an MTV Award winning video, if I recall.)I believe Family Guy played the entire video on an episode as a joke. Oddly, I never heard it (or paid attention to...
What were your humble beginnings on the path to high end audio?
Ha! I started with dumpster diving into a Lafayette Audio junk bin and buying a $5 mono tube amp (that's right just ONE) and buying a run of the mill 12" woofer that I hooked up to a portable Sony TC-60 cassette player.Later I "upgraded" to adding...
VPI Prime or Scout or ???
I upgraded from a VPI HW-19 Jr/Rega RB-300 arm (which was the last turntable I was going to own) to my Scout 2 (older model) the current last TT I would ever own (heh).ANY VPI (practically) will give you a simple, nice performing TT that will last...
