Felt Mats or ???
I had tried a number of mats over the years, but it wasn't until I bought my first heavily Merrill modified AR turntable that I realized it's a platter SYSTEM that makes a difference. George Merrill would upgrade the stock mass produced AR drive p...
Merrill tables
My understanding is the new price is a kind of "factory direct" price. It's no longer being sold at a true retail level. The cost saving is a resut of no "middleman."Perhaps VTVU can explain it better. Dave
Merrill tables
I own a Merrill Heirloom and it is in Anthony's hands as I write. I am going for the full refurbish and I am going to have a new Ortofon arm installed. I always said the Heirloom was going to be my last table, but knowing Anthony's work and George...
The AR turntable
Ignore the negative comments on the Rega arms. It is a solid arm offered at a price that is an incredible value. I've heard literally dozens on these mid-80's ARs. Dave
Two-Year-Olds and Turntables...
Unless you plan to CONSTANTLY monitor, you should move the table to a higher spot, out of reach. I've seen firsthand the damage a child can do to cartridge, tonearm, and valuable vinyl. Not pretty! Why put yourself through the stress, and the paren...
Should I upgrade my Merrill turntable?
Hi,Never heard or owned a Scoutmaster, but the Merrill easily bested a Music Hall MMF-7. Easily. Not sure what upgrading the tuning weight or clamp would do, unless they are damaged. The springs could use replacing, yes. I would talk to Anthony at...
AR Gallery Pic of the Day
I'm always looking for more gallery photos, Ken. Your table is certainly worthy!Dave
Replacement headshell for AR
Lolo,There are dozens (if not 100s) of people who would be interested in that modification to those headshells. Can you elborate? With photos, maybe?Dave
Turntables from 1-10: Personality 8.5 Beauty 12
Save $9600 and buy a beautifully restored mint AR XA. You cannot beat their Zen-like simplicty, and I still can't believe how good that can sound given that clunky-looking arm. No, they will never compete with these other tables for sonics, but I ...
Turntable packing wall of shame
I think Joel's instructions at the Turntable Factory are the quintessential instructions out there. Do a google on "how to pack a turntable" and it comes up first. I touch on the topic in my July 14, 2005 blog, but not to the level Joel does. titl...
I would like to upgrade from Sumiko MMT tonearm
Proper set up is critical. The stylus is tracking information many times smaller than a human hair. There are some great helpful guides at the top of the Vinyl Asylum home page.MY recommedation beyond proper set up is to get a record vac. A little...
NAD PP2 or Project Phono Box MKII
I've tried all of the under $200 preamps. I think the Creek OB-H8 is the clear winner.Dave
Thorens TD 125
Hi all,Relative to Rene's recommendation, I just wanted to let everyone know that I do NOT sell parts. Every fall I have a "yard sale" on eBay and clear out some TT "carcasses" that contain some good stuff, but generally, I need the parts myself t...
Up grade Sumiko MMT
I agree with gpsvcr...save your pennies, and for now go with a better cartridge or a new stylus. I have a Sota Jewel with a fully modded RB-250. I like the combination a lot. I know another person who loves the Linn Akito arm on their Sapphire.Dave
VPI periphery record ring for VPI Scoutmaster
I have a Merrill Heirloom with the periphery ring. (I believe Merrill first offered them.) I have only owned the table a month, but I notice an improvement in warped AND unwarped records. As a previous writer notes, is that worth 500 dollars...I d...
