great musician's audio systems

Whats the best Cartridge for a bright Pro-ject 9 ?
Make sure Bluepoint is well broken in and the VTA is not too high. Sounds like you might have both problems. I've got the Sumiko Blackbird and it's wonderful with my Pro-ject RM10.Dave

Exactly Ed. The Coherence and Capri are Jeff's reference, which are high standards indeed. Talking to him, there's no way this will be a step backward, although I find it hard to imagine how he'll surpass the Capri.Ed, have you compared the Capri ...
Is there any way I can use my cd player as DAC?
There's an exception to every rule. The Playback Designs MPS-5 apparently has a stellar DAC, transport and output stages. That's a different price range from what we're talking about here; however, you could spend much more on a dCS "stack" and pe...
Is there any way I can use my cd player as DAC?
Sounds unlikely with your Sony, since a "digital-in" is essential. You'll probably improve the Sony with an external DAC, like the Bel Canto DAC3 or the Benchmark. The DAC is very important, I'd focus on that prior to trying to improve the transpor...
Oppo as transport
Thanks for the follow-up Lngbruno. That finding is VERY interesting to me. My Playback Designs has an Esoteric VOSP transport, reputed to be one of the very best available and the Oppo gives me roughly 90% of what I get using the PD's internal tra...

Good stuff. I love great guitar solos, so I'll start looking.Dave
Review: Sumiko Speaker Set Speaker
It's amazing how few people "get it." Welcome to the club. Cheapest upgrade you ever made, right?Dave
Oppo as transport
Sounds like a great plan to me, and the transport will be....?
DAC as an upgrade
Mapman, if you're not hearing glare or haze and you can listen for hours on end, then you've got a fine setup. The fact that a small move of the speakers made a significant difference to you tells me that you're really tuned into small distortions...
ARC Ref 3: Tung-Sol 6550 in power supply?
This tube-rolling looks exciting. Guido, could you direct me to a tube to "improve" my Rowland Continuum 500? I'm looking for, you know, some magic. ;-) Use all your senses this time and give me a really good recommendation.Dave
Oppo as transport
OK, if you only need Redbood CD then you might seriously look for an older Esoteric, TEAC or other CDP known for their solid transport, to use with your DAC3, making sure you've got digital-out that matches the DAC.Dave
lps sound bad
I'll pile on and say that my original "Hotel California" sucked, due to a crappy pressing, all too typical of that time. Yeah, the music was great, but there's no resurrecting that crappy pressing no matter how good your cartridge.Don't forget, LP...
Oppo as transport
Yes, I think that the higher the quality of the DAC the more it makes up for any shortcomings in the transport. My discussions earlier in this thread were all about feeding a signal to an upsampling to DSD DAC, with a very robust output stage and ...
