Vandersteen 5Aa Carbon--any 5a owner's opinions?
Bass - Richard's system is really good - maybe the best. However, technology moves on and no stereo pair of subwoofers can flatten out all the room modes encountered in a real world room. An eleven-band analog equalizer can't match the 100's of po...
Koetsu Jade v SPU classic v FR 7 fz cartidges
Nandric, the stamped FR headshells are not so hot, but the RS-121 is a cast, gusseted headshell that is a work of art. That one came with the FR-64fx and FR-66fx. Anything that looks like the SME 3009 is stiffer than an Orsonic, however, which vib...
Koetsu Jade v SPU classic v FR 7 fz cartidges
Howard, you need to try an FR headshell - you can find them on eBay. The Koetsu is too heavy and too low in compliance for an Orsonic. You can occasionally find an FR-7f or fz on eBay but they are rare and go for $2500+. Well worth the effort if yo...
Linda Ronstadt/Nelson Riddle
This was also released on DVD-A as a multi-channel recording. Great sound, back in the day when Linda could sing like an angel.
New direct drive turntables?
The Denons use an AC Servo direct drive system. All the rest are DC direct drive. The new VPI Direct is an AC servo DD and supposedly is an updated clone of the Denon DP-100. The Denons are widely considered to be the best of the vintage direct dr...
Solid State Buffer
The FirstWatt Pass B-1 is an excellent discrete buffer using high speed JFETs. Hard to beat. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can build one - Pass sells the boards and stuffing guide at PassDIY.com
Getting great stereo sound from multi channel sys.
Option 1 is probably best on a budget. Option 3 is definitely best IF you buy the RIGHT digital processor. The list is short - I would select a Meridian 861 or G65 or G68, or the excellent Theta Casablanca. The room correction these processors pro...
How Many Turntables Have You Owned
Ummm - a bunch. Fons CQ-30 with SME 3009 Series II arm, Linn LP-12 with Grace 707, Magnepan Unitrac and Signet TK-50 arms, B&O 8002 (gorgeous table), VPI HW-19 Mk. III with Rega 250 arm(modded), VPI Scout with JMW-9 arm, VPI HW-19 Mk. IV with ...
Ray Manzarek RIP
Ray was a keyboard wizard. The Doors didn't have a bass player, so Manzarek played all the bass parts, as well as the melody, rhythm, etc. Ray and Jim Morrison had a bond that allowed Ray to compose and play Morrison's poetry and emotional shading...
Two-channel is inferior to multi-channel, no?
Rebel, based on Kal's excellent advice, I went to a Meridian-based system using a G68XXD, a BAT 6200 multi-channel amp and Vandersteen 5.1 speakers. Trifield, as you noted, adds to every stereo program I've tried it on...it seems to add depth of f...
Best vintage or modern tonearms for Denon DP 80
Fidelity Research FR-64 works well.
Shelf for VPI scout
I use Boardsmith 2" thick mahogany butcher block boards under both of my tables - a spring suspended VPI HW-19 Mk. IV belt-drive turntable and a direct suspended Denon DP-75 DD turntable. Boardsmith will make a butcher block to any size and specie...
Shelf for VPI scout
I use 2" thick Boardsmith built mahogany butcher block cutting boards for my TT's which then are isolated on elastomer pucks made by Vibropod. The whole works is then hung off the walls of my system 2' deep by 4.5' wide alcove. It works pretty wel...
Meridian sound
Not that I can hear. The biggest difference between these processors is flexibility and upgradability. The 861 is truly modular. The G68 is more of a fixed design.
Recommendation for new 5-ch Amp
BAT VK-6200. It can be configured for 2,3,4,5 or 6 channels. 200W into 8 ohms or 400 watts into 4 ohms per channel, all channels driven simultaneously. Independent 700VA PS for each channel. Makes the Theta and Krell MCH amps look like toys. It's ...
