A great article on Class D/switching amps
I'm a subscriber of The Absolute Sound, but I didn't receive any issue containing the article you've mentioned.Chris
cable dielectric cause of artificial sound
Although this is a controversial and a bit off topic I would add another statement: twisting wires within an audio cable (interconnect or speaker cable), although fine for rejecting RFI en EMI, can make the sound lifeless and unengaging.Chris
cable dielectric cause of artificial sound
Hi Sean, is this phenomenon you've described the reason for some manufacturers to "energize" their cables with 24V (or higher)? Audio is full of unexplained phenomena.Chris
Why do digital cables sound different?
Hi folks, I have been using two top of the line AES/EBU digital cables from Pure Note (Paragon Enhanced) and Purist Audio (Dominus). After a while, I inserted back my old Wireworld Gold Starlight II S/PDIF, because I prefer the Wireworld over both...
Anyone know anything about a new Rowland 312?
Guido, if the 312 uses the model 501 ICEpower module (ASP1000), then it has a built in switch mode power supply. It doesn't make sense, why would Jeff replace the built in SMPS with an external (transformer based) one?Chris
accuphase vs dartzeel
Hi Adhoc, could you give a description of what you like and what you don't like about the Dartzeel in comparison with Accuphase? Which preamp do you use and which speakers? Thank you.Chris
non over sampling DAC better than 24/96 or192 DAC?
It is in my opinion a matter of taste. NOS DACs sound natural and fluid with very good ambience retrieval and microdynamics. They have smaller soundstage though. Up- and oversampling DACs sound bold, powerful in the bass and have wide soundstage. ...
Which speaker to replace Dunlavy SC-V?
Hi folks, thanks for all your wonderful responses. Sonically I don't have any objections against the SC-Vs. As you stated Shadorne, they are very neutral, "monitor-like" but not cool or "sterile" sounding at all (B&W speakers tend to have this...
Isolation Transformers
In my experience some isolation trannies are more suitable for audio application than others. You can hear tonal differences as well between those trannies. I think it has to do with the characteristics of the (iron) core of the isolation trannie ...
Avantgarde Trio replacing Dunlavy SC-V?
Thanks for all your responses. Maybe I should try another speaker placement first. Those Dunlavies are heavy mfs though.Chris
Speaker Lifespan
It depends on the material being used, especially for the driver cone surround. Foam is (albeit musical sounding) very susceptible to rot, while rubber is more durable. I think the Xover components are not subject to degradation, because of the re...
PAD Venustas
Jafox: that is the one thing I found a bit lacking with the Venustas: because of the very polite and laid back character, there is less of "involvement" into the music. The sound is very refined though. Maybe it has also something to do with PRaT....
Anybody tried 20th Anniversary Purist cables?
Dan: I have auditioned the Venustas XLR balanced and AES/EBU digital interconnects. Both were sounding good. The only thing which bothered me a bit was the laid back and very polite sound of both the cables. I had less than 100 hours on them, so i...
APRIL MUSIC EXIMUS- HOW GOOD IS IT??
Hi, to my knowledge only the Eximus Stello cdp is currently being manufactured. It is a very good sounding unit. I auditioned it recently and compared it to my own Accuphase DC-91 DAC (with the Eximus Stello as transport). I'm contemplating to get...
Anybody tried 20th Anniversary Purist cables?
Has anyone compared the Pure Note Paragon Enhanced and the PAD Aqueous/Venustas? I'm asking this because the Pure Note is among the best discoveries I had in the past two years. But if the PAD is really that better, I would like to home audition i...
