Real world life expectancy of a high end cartridge?
I use the golf clicker too, but have settled on 20 minutes a side. I keep two cartridges, an SPU Synergy and Benz Micro LP and have re tipped them both once. There seems to be two issues regarding cartridge life, sound quality and record wear. Of t...
Your last concert was to see who and when?
About 2 weeks, Stacey Kent, the Jazz chanteuse with Jim Tomlinson, her Saxophonist husband. It was excellent, as usual, the 6th time I've seen her, I think
Empirical Audio Synchro mesh reclocker, anybody?
Slightly off the subject, has anyone any views on good USB reclocking units? Unfortunately the Synchro mesh doesn't service USB inputs. Thanks
How to value a used CD collection?
Sorry to throw a spanner in the works here, but if you rip your CDs, my understanding is you have to keep the cds as proof of ownership and your right to rip them in the first place. If you don't, you could be prosecuted, unlikely though that migh...
Best CDs
I can't comment on oppo, but on the subject of failsafe CD labels, then the following would fall in that category, IMHO.  Stockfisch,  A great German label, with some wonderful artists, Sara K, David Munyon, Alan Taylor and many more.ECM,   recor...
What are the best speakers you have ever owned and why?
Isn't it likely, in most cases, people will thank the current speakers are the best, it's true in my case? Would anyone trade in speakers for something worse? Accepting that in some cases, your choice might be wrong. My current speakers are certai...
It was 50 years ago today....
That rooftop concert, believe it or not, I was standing in the street below. I just happened to be walking by, my Dad had is office about 300 yards away.
Life of KT150 tubes on ARC Amps
I am very happy with my 75SE, which has been upgraded to SE status for at least 3 years. I haven't replaced the tubes and have no idea how many hours they have on the clock. I listen a lot to my Stax l700 ear speakers anyway, so don't believe I am...
First DAC: Metrum-MHDT-Rega-or?
There are so many good, reasonably priced DACs around. If you want a natural, analogue sound, then Metrum is hard to beat. I recently replaced my Ayre QB9 DAC for a Metrum Octave at a fraction of the price and it is excellent. If you want a more d...
Are DAC's overpriced?
I think you could rather say, is all HiFi overpriced? My answer would be yes. Having said that, DACs may be one area where there are bargains or relative bargains. Companies like Mytek,, Metrum, Rega. Chord, and others, make some great kit at reas...
What unknown musical artist would you like to share with your fellow audiophiles?
Although we have an international music scene, there are still many artists that don't seem to cross the pond. There are many US artists here that are new to me, so here are a couple of UK artists that might be new to you.John Martyn, a great Sing...
Non Oversampling DACs
I don't think anyone is saying it is bad, just that NOS DACs seem to have a warmer sound, with less digital grain. So as I said with the originalnal post, it gives a different sound, your choice which you prefer.
Are Pass Labs amps probably the best ever you can buy ?
Can you say any piece of equipment or manufacturer is the best. As Roberjerman suggests, best is in the context of other components. Pass labs are great, I still remember my old Aleph 3 and wonder why I sold it. If you put a gun to my head and don...
Alabama Shakes
No sorry, no connection to david10.
Alabama Shakes
As an aside, am I the only person  whose first thoughts when I hear the name Alabama Shakes, is the opening credits of the Sopranos. Not only one of the greatest TV shows, but the best ever opening credits.
