mcintosh MC 7270 or mc 7200 I think the MC7200 wins hands down over the MC7270. According to McIntosh, the 7200 was their attempt to compete with the big Krells and Levinsons of the day. The 7200's 200 watts sounds better than the 7270's 270 watts as I've owned both. For vin...
Dr. Dre Beats Be careful of buying these headphones on Craigslist as there are fakes being sold all over the place and it's tough to tell the difference.
Cheap but decent preamp ??? I'd check out some of the older NAD pre-amps, which can be bought for $200 and have a great phone stage included. I've been using an NAD 106 and it sounds great.
Best speakers for about $3500 I think if you liked the N802's the N803's would be the best choice in that price range. I'd have to think they're going to be closer in sound to the N802's than the DM604's you did not like. I've owned N805's and thought they were a great speaker...
Name your lame duck artist........ I will have to defend Metallica also as I really think their earlier albums (Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, the Black album) defined heavy metal and were very well done.
Subwoofer reccomendations for B&W 805S? I agree with Stanwal, check out an REL sub. I could never get a sub to integrate with my speakers until I bought an REL Storm III, which I've used with many speakers and it always sounds great; which means it really doesn't draw attention to itsel...
AV Signal over Coax? What are you trying to hook up exactly? Do you have an HD satellite receiver? Are the only HD inputs on the TV component (red, blue, green)?
Difference between 720p and 1080p projectors? Most HD cable, satellite, and over the air signals are broadcast in 720P (1080i) not 1080P. The most common source for 1080P is the Blu-ray DVD format. So, on broadcast HD, you won't see much difference between a 720P or 1080P projector.
MAC Autoformers? I'm not nearly as knowledgable as our "in-house" expert, Aball, on all things McIntosh, but I do know that my MC7200 does not have the autoformers and it is one very nice sounding amp, probably one of the best McIntosh built for the money. As usua...
McIntosh Vintage Preamps I'd agree with Stanwal and if you're going to stay with a McIntosh pre-amp, find a more recent C15 or C712. For a price range of around $800 or so, these are very nice sounding pre-amps for the money. Member Aball recommended these two and I've ow...
8TC vs. 4TC Thanks, that's what I thought.Dave
Driving a Thiel I've owned several models of Thiels and you're going to hear this repeatedly from others, but no, a receiver will not effectively drive these speakers. Even at low volumes, you'll never hear what these speakers are capable of without a good, solid...
Amp for Thiel CS6 I would throw the Mark Levinson 300 series of amps in the mix also. I've had good results with the 331, but moving up the line would offer ever greater power and control over the Thiels.
Recommendation needed for Turntable I still think the older VPI HW19 tables offer a lot for the money. There's upgrades available so you can start with a basic HW-19 Jr. and upgrade as the budget allows.
