Personal speaker evolution
Infinity Qa $250 new;Magnepan MG-1 Imp. $700 new;Martin Logan Sequels $1900 new;Revel Ultima Salons $16k demoI've tended to keep speakers longer than other components, in part because its just harder to keep "extras" around because of size, but in...
Most compelling vocal you discovered in a movie?
I've got two: for a song that I was previously unfamiliar with, "Harlem Blues" from the Spike Lee movie. For a new performance of a standard that absolutely blows you away, "How Long Has This Been Going On", from 'Round Midnight.
Phono preamp
By the time you pay for the case, power supply, power cord, and posts on an outboard unit in the price range you identify, there just isn't much left in the budget for the relevant circuitry. I would stick with what you have, much as that irks the...
Audiophile oddities
The 2S puts the rock in a velvet bag to reduce brightness.
Which used tubed pre-amp & turntable for convert?
My suggestion would be to drop 2k on a VPI table with a relatively basic arm and an Audio Research PH-3, which maximizes the extent to which your budget is directed toward your goal (versus a full preamp, when you already have a decent one). The c...
Revel Studio or Salon?
I think the Salons are worth the difference in price, and have voted with my wallet. Both are terrific at their pricepoints, but the Salons deliver more than enough in image size and apparent ease of reproduction to justify the premium.
would it be a huge mistake?
Respectable sounding brands (Threshold) find aftermarket support despite going out of business, even when they had shaky reliability ratings when in business (Counterpoint, IMHO deservedly so). As a captive audience, you may pay a little too much ...
What Headphones? Looking to upgrade..........
The Sennheiser 600 is a great value, comparable in sound quality to the two wood-bodied Grados (can't recall their model numbers), at a slight sacrifice in build quality, for a significant reduction (percentage-wise) in cost. If you aren't also bu...
Speaker recommendations for 2,500 or less?
Agree entirely with subaruguru--used Revel F30's are real winners at this pricepoint.
Any great speakers out there?
I was a good little soldier in the army of electrostatic lovers until I heard the Revel Salons. Against the Martin Logan Prodigy, they made me realize (and quickly) that the big soundstage that good electrostatics throw can be as much a function o...
A Love Supreme
Clearly one of the major ones, though, for me, Crescent is a bit more compelling and Ballads only a bit less compelling. So much greatness in his work that its hard to single out any one album for special attention.
Magnepan MG 2s'..Old,OK, but worth re-furb?
I bought a pair of MG1's in 1982 or 1983 and sold them to a friend of mine when I upgraded. He still has them, and they sound fine. I'm pretty sure the MG2 is just a bigger version of the same technology--the ribbon tweeters didn't filter that far...
HHB "BurnIt" vs. Sony CDR-W33? Any experience??
I own the Sony and have been happy enough with it. Copies are good quality. Playback is lacklustre, but that isn't why its in my system, and, for its pricepoint, is no worse than you'd expect. It isn't built like a tank, but I do think build quali...
Theta DS Pro Gen V or newer?
I recently bought a used Va for just under $1000 and like it reasonably well. I've been able to do close comparisons to the Audio Research CD2 one-box unit and to one of the "pro" Sony cd recorders, which is at a wildly lower pricepoint, but presu...
What do you think of Nakamichi in general ?
I'm a little more upbeat in my view than Sugarbrie, but Nak has certainly gone very significantly downhill. In their good years, even the cheaper tapedecks were surprisingly well built for their price points, while 3 or 4 of the better Naks are le...
