Tube/Solid State Bi-Amplification
Biamp capable speakers usually means there is a high pass filter behind the mid/tweeter speaker input and a low pass filter behind the mid/woofer speaker input. Adding an electronic crossover will mean that you have both active and passive crossov...
Reducing my effective room size
I'd also suggest the short wall. The drapes behind the speakers should be fine. Then some sort of quasi partition (like bookshelves) could be used for diffraction behind the listening position.
Best system for the budding audiophile?
Here are some questions you need to answer for yourself (my choices in parentheses):Tube or solid State? (tube)Power? (3.5w~94dB/w spkr sensitivity; 7w~91dB/w; 15w~88dB/w)Preamp or amp with volume control? (preamp eventually)Floor standers or Moni...
Merlin owners
I have the Merlin VSM-M without the BAM (and have never heard one). The Merlin site states: 5.2dB of boost at 35 Hz; Subsonic bass roll-off below 27Hz. I chose not to use a BAM because I use a low power SET amp for which 5.2dB would be rather sign...
best cable for dac
There was a thread on this topic a week or so ago. With a Bel Canto DAC1, I got better results with a transport and coax cable than DVD and toslink. I use a Cardas Lightening.
Wall panels to control brightness

New Tube Break-In
Advice from Upscale Audio:"First time start-up and flashing lights - If your gear has filaments that are constant on, first install the tubes, plug it in according to manufacturers instructions, and let it sit for a few hours. I know you want to h...
Low Level, Nearfield Nirvana?
You might want to try a digital graphic eq. The classic approach for near field is to introduce a 'room curve' which is a 3dB/octave attenuation above 2kHz (some people use 2dB/octave). If they still sound harsh, a reduction at 2kHz (the 'presence...
Opinions on the Bose 901
The bose are truely an interesting design meant to create a mix of direct and reflected sound before the days of digital time delays. Unequalized, they have a haystack response as you would expect from the size of the driver, relatively flat from ...
Amp shootout.....Tenor 75wi verses Berning ZH270
Very interesting thread - I agree that more like this would be great. However, I'm glad I didn't get to hear the system, lest I be forever dissatisfied with my own.
Do "Tube Rings" really work?
I put Hal-Os on an AES AE3 preamp and did not hear a difference. I do, however, have the preamp on a Bright Star Air Mass 3 isolation platform and that did make a differnce when I added it. I don't know if the Hal-Os would have made a difference w...

DVD player as the best transport to use with DAC?
I have a Bel Canto DAC-1 and they said the same about it. I compared a Pioneer DV-414 and a CAL Delta transport. They were very different in my system! With the Pioneer there was a very large but unfocused sound stage that was well out in front of...
Help I got a big time Hum in my system
Be sure to use a star configuration where the power cord of each piece goes to a single source of current. You probably know that but just in case I thought I'd mention it. Good luck.
Digital cable v. standard interconnects
Van den Hul carbon cables are said to be usable as digital cables in their literature. I use the Second (shielded version) as interconnects. I tried one as a digital cable but much preferred my Cardas Lightning digital cable.
