Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Regarding the era of poor CDs, I mean that the CDs published in the 80s and early 90s of bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s, generally sound very bad. As you noted with albums, there are always exceptions, but they are typically not mainstream labels. O...

Glad to hear that your horns are singing again and that you're more than happy with the CASTs. Thanks again for sharing each step of the way - really enjoyed it :)I'll bet that when you get a good digital source, you'll end up either throwing out ...
Best Integrated Amp Of All Times?
I'll nominate my trusty Luxman L-5 which was purchased in the 70s. I am still using it 30 years later to drive my surround sound speakers on SACD. Sounds amazingly good and seems to be missing that 70s SS sound (which is why I bought it in the fir...

You are certainly crazy stubborn, but that is not necessarily a bad thing :) I have great respect for your quest to restore the sound of the horns you clearly love. It's an achievable goal and you are almost there. Congrats! In retrospect, I should...
What's the oldest piece of gear in your system?
Luxman L-5 integrated (1975?). It's the first piece of audiophile quality equipment I ever purchased. Built many a great system around it - always flawless. Then marriage, work, moving, kids and 15+ years boxed up in the garage. Now I use it to po...
Speaker Help Required
This summer I bought some Gallo Ref 3.1s and have been very happy with them. While a bit over your budget (I paid $2300 delivered) they are a great music and HT speaker as you can ditch your troublesome subwoofer and just power the second voice co...
Gallo Reference 3.1 questions...
Thanks Bean, could you please be more specific: which albums do you recommend to highlight the Gallos dynamism? In genres I'm familiar with I'd recommend a few SACD CDs. One is Flim & the BBs Tricycle. It's old but well recorded GRP digital so...

I can't believe I read the whole thing! OK, I skipped over some of Volley's ramblings, (who hasn't?) and I have these comments:1) I still don't care for most Beatles songs2) There are some great cap comparison links here - thanks3) Volleyguy you: ...
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE
* KEF 104/2: Owned these for over 15 years and still love them (well the memory of them). Smooth highs, detailed midrange, unique port loaded bass. Image like 2 ways, solid sound staging, and most importantly: they play MUSIC.* Gallo Ref 3.1: To s...
Gallo Reference 3.1 questions...
You're right Bean, I didn't mention dynamics, but the Gallos do it very well. In my "journey" I've focused on what was different than my KEF 104/2s. Both speakers are very dynamic and I'd call it a tie. Also agree that they like to be cranked (or I...
best amp to drive Gallo 3.1's?
Don't know the best, but I use a Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista 300. Silky smooth highs and solid bass. The mids are true to life with a coolish/dryish presentation. Plenty of power for sure. Typical preamp gain is 9 to 11 O'clock position. Rock'n out ...
Gallo Reference 3.1 questions...
It's been a while since I last posted and the Gallos are now fully broken in... and sounding great! But it's not just the break-in that has made them sound better. I also made some key setup and environment changes. Here are the four things I did ...
Gallo Reference 3.1 questions...
I just bought a pair of these last week. Overall, I am very happy with them. I do notice them improving as they break-in (love you Sade :)These are replacing my beloved KEF 104/2s. These are fantastic speakers in their own right with great imaging...
Gallo Reference 3.1 questions...
Thanks Bean and James for your suggestions. I forgot to mention that my amp is a Musical Fidelity NuVista 300, fed by a MF AC3R pre-amp with source coming from a Wright modded Sony SCD CE775 for SACD and a MF 3D for redbook. Cables by Kimber. I'll...
