Speakers with external parts, gimmicks or serious? just another marketing gimmick.in any speaker you can change internal crossover components. making them external identical to detachable power cord is only i guess for silly.
Vintage amp as preamp not good idea. the output signal out of console may be too high. chance of overloading input is pretty big to burn out the input stages.
THE most sonically dissappointing (lp) you own of great music? Most of Manhattan Transfer vinyls sound horrible, but CDs sound substantially better.

Last CD player? at this price level the warranty should be lifetime.
Would increasing the gain in the amp give more weight to the sound? Any negatives? well musical fidelity has inexpensive unity gain buffer device that also inverts the phase. one can be placed between the source and amp, but active preamp will work much more efficient than even mentioned inverting transformer. "Vintage" high end gear vs new and upgrade path? Current high-end is pricier than ever for equipment of a same or better quality so upgrade is right path for given budget.
Would increasing the gain in the amp give more weight to the sound? Any negatives? All you need to do is to move your volume control all the way up and use one of line inputs of your integrated with preamp of your choice. Would increasing the gain in the amp give more weight to the sound? Any negatives? In integrated amps with passive preamp section it's common not to have full body sound, but transparent. I heard Creek amps with passive section and described them as Brittish-polite and shy amps. I like'm somewhat rude and brave -- in other words...
