Outlets and Wire Gauge? - Please help!
is 10awg existent inside your amp or inside your speakers, once you're past the binding posts?   seems like overkill, but whatever floats your boat the relatively inexpensive outlets that provide solid plug connection seem reasonable but like I...
Women Who Rock
I dunno... I don't worry about gender nor race That said, I was underwhelmed both by Joan Jett and by Alanis Morisette when I saw them in concert (separately).  Jett was, dare I say, boring and predictable... Morisette I could barely understand t...
Some famous reviewers have atrocious listening rooms!
@prof  +1 yeah, nice, a well-used and inviting flexible multi-purpose room  @bipod72 +1 and yes, agreed... and why some gear, certain speakers for example, might not be "perfect" in a lonely lab room but out in the general living room really come...
Some famous reviewers have atrocious listening rooms!
Maybe they're reviewing based on how most people in real life would use the gear...  it's only the minority odd "audiophile" ducks that isolate themselves in a perfect chair in some perfect little space away from the rest of the life of their hom...
Were you an audiophile in the 1980s and 1990s?
the new and better "golden age of audio" is right now! Yes, I was an audiophile in the late 70s, and through the 80s and 90s...  and my MVL, most valuable lesson: bigger, fancier, more expensive does not equal better
What is your experience with amp power?
for those worrying about the clear-as-mud, here's a simple solution: the Marantz 40N amp is simple, has real knobs, and has 75 wpc rated and is enough for almost any reasonable home
LOUDEST Concert and Tinnitus
I also want to repeat, to answer the OP's second question: tinnitus does not have to get progressively worse, though you do need to protect from further loud shocks going forward...  High quality hearing aids these days can and do diminish, and i...
LOUDEST Concert and Tinnitus
Loudest I have been to was a Rush concert... I plugged my ears with tissue paper.  The show was OK but not even that great, and the volume and the whole thing made me wished I had stayed home... it wasn't enjoyable. As for tinnitus: excellent hea...
What is your experience with amp power?
I ran for at least 15 years on a 20wpc Philips receiver (when Phil was making some fine gear) and it was plenty for my purposes and rocked the house when needed.
WHEN DID YOU FINALLY STOP...
Yes, looks like I'm with the "stopped" crowd... though I must admit I'm not completely stopped because I still want to get a pair of Q Acoustics Concept 50 in my living room, to contrast with my Heresy IV... for a couple different flavors I can go...
Is Imaging Worth Chasing?
yes, perhaps "as things get better" I can agree with, but not if "better" means more money necessarily...  My Epi100s were $140 in 1979, though I have since updated the capacitor crossover, and were driven by inexpensive and even low-power (20wpc...
Low level listening
My old Epi 100 speakers sound great at low volumes, as does my Heresy IV.  Both also sound great at moderate and high volumes.  There doesn't need to be a tradeoff.
Is Imaging Worth Chasing?
@secretguy +1 @frogman +1 That said, if you’re not satisfied with your sound, speakers are the most efficient route to go. Good speakers will have both full robust and satisfying sound - the best also being non-fatiguing, not an exaggerated treb...
Why do we stop listening to new music as we get older?
@flyfish77 +1 "Discovering new music is far more important to me than the minutia of tweaking the sound quality of the music systems in my home.  Roon's ability to play or suggest new music to me has enhanced my music enjoyment far more than any g...
Why do we stop listening to new music as we get older?
@newbee +1 Who is this "we?" That said, sometimes it takes a while for the wheat to be separated from the chaffe, to see what stands up over time instead of being an unsubstantial "fizzle"... so the efficient thing is to give it a few years and ...
