From my experiences with the ZH270, it does sound best with an active preamp. I think solid state or tubes comes down to personal preference, as long as its high quality and musical it should sound great. Without a preamp the ZH270 sounds very ope...

Traditional looking speakers
I second the Harbeths, having owned the 2nd pair of HL7ES mkII in the US, I can vouge for their musicality and build. These are beautiful handcrafted works of art. 
No Audiophiles in Hollywood
As Good As It Gets - Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt. Jack "Melvin Udall" has a McIntosh system, a turntable and possibly Avalon towers. You can spot it at least a couple of times in the movie. I think it came out around 1999 or so.

I agree with Duke, SoundLabs would be a stunning addition to your system. Heads above the Quads in every regard, not too mention can do things no dynamic loudspeaker can.Best of luck.

Is the Berning ZH270 revalatory?
To this date, the Berning 270 amplifier remains at the very top of my most wanted list. It is without a doubt the finest sounding amplifer I have heard thus far. 
What are the most under-appreciated products?
David Berning products, way ahead of their time. I have never before seen such advanced tube circuit designs, utterly impressive engineering and sonics.
